Summary Of Horatio Alger Myth
Horatio Alger, a short essay written by Harlon Dalton in effort to debunk the myths commonly seen in the classic American hero. It begins with discussing the main ideas conveyed in these stories and how they create a “socially destructive” narrative. The author objects to three main concepts that are portrayed in the Horatio Alger myth. The first idea of these stories is that everyone is only judged based on their own actions and accomplishments (Dalton). The author argues this notion as being simply inaccurate due to the fact that there are many characteristics, such as race, gender, and sexual orientation, in which we are constantly judged by in reality (Dalton). The author then discusses the idea behind the second message portrayed in the

In reading this article, titled "The Death of Horatio Alger" written by Paul Krugman, I found the main focus was Krugman’s idea based off of the value of the article, “Waking Up From the American Dream.” The author communicates the suggestion of the American Dream dying. This would infer Americans would lose the capability for improvement economically different from how it used to be. Horatio Alger was a well proclaimed self-made man who received all the glory of an American dream through hard work. Krugman however, argues regardless of hard work, the hungriness for money is what has caused a stagnant shift in the economic society today, making the stretch for the American Dream…

Harlon L. Dalton in his essay "Horatio Alger" criticizes a concept of the "American dream" - the idea that presents America as the country where the opportunity for a success is possible for all hard working, talented and determined people regardless of race, gender and their social status. What is a Hero? Soldiers and police officers have had our praise for decades, but do they all deserve our adulation? In the compelling article, “You don’t protect my freedom: Our childish insistence on calling soldiers heroes deadens real democracy,” David Masciotra sends doubt into the reader’s system, prompting the question: what is a hero? Masciotra persuades readers that not all of their leaders and fighters are heroic due to the flaws in the security, military, and democratic systems of America. Rhetorically, Masciotra expresses his opinion with logic to justify and validate his claim.…

Ambrose Bierce’s, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, is the story of a want-to-be hero. The main character, Peyton Farquhar, cannot participate in the war, and has to stick to just being a farmer. Bierce puts a spin on what it is to be a hero in this story, and what happens to them. In his story through the eyes of Farquahr, one must be a soldier, do something spectacular, and then make away back home to the soldiers family, to be a hero. These are the three parts of what it means to be a hero; although Farquhar interestingly enough, never gets to be a hero. In an unexpected turn of events, Farquhar is actually dies in the seconds after the Union soldier drops the floor from under Farquhar.…

As William Makepeace Thackeray once said, "bravery never goes out of fashion." This theme is evident both in modern day life and ancient literature. As America found out this past August, men will go to all ends to prove their masculinity. William Lawson, of Louisiana, is among the more recent examples of this. Years after leaving the Marine Corps as a grunt, without fighting experience, he masqueraded as a Marine Corps General. His deception lasted for decades before his story unraveled. Similarly, men throughout time have come up with ways of cloaking their foolishness with a deep blanket of machoism. Such is the tale of Odysseus, of Homer's Odyssey. As Book Nine of the Odyssey reveals, Odysseus' tactful nature belies the many mistakes he makes.…

Being a hero has been an ultimate dream that every man can have. Like super heroes, you have super natural powers, wearing fancy looking customs, and fight off bad guys to protect innocent people from harm. People cheers you whenever and wherever they see you, with such appreciations, gratitude, and respect, life of hero seems like a living in a dream. However, in reality, a hero means something different. A hero can be anybody like your father, your brother, your neighbor, or your friend, who would risk their own lives just to save or protect people from any danger that they might face. Our military can be a great example, since these men and women sworn an oath to protect our country and people by putting themselves in a harm’s way. Of course, not all military occupations are combat related and military experience can be vary depends on the location you are stationed and specific military occupation, they are still some risk they have to take especially if they are deployed in hostile warzone like in Iraq or Afghanistan. Many have fallen and many have returned as heroes, but being a military hero in today’s society can’t be more interesting than a highly famed celebrity’s ridiculous life style. How ignorant are we to these heroes? While it is difficult to imagine their struggles and what they are going through after they return, Ben Fountain, an author of the fictional novel Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, addresses our society’s lack of recognition of our heroes by putting us in the shoes of young fictional character, Billy Lynn.…
