Summary Of Maxillofacial Trauma
Any patient presenting with maxillofacial trauma, has by definition, a head injury whether or not the cranium is involved. For this reason, maxillofacial trauma patients must initially be assessed using ATLS protocol to ensure life-threatening injuries are prioritized.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a traumatically induced injury or disruption of brain function as a result of the trauma or external force. TBI results in at least one of the following clinical signs following the event: (1) Any period of loss, or a decreased level, of consciousness. (2) Any loss of memory. (3) Any alteration in mental state at the time of the injury (4) Neurological deficits (5) Intracranial lesion.
