Neoclassicism (meaning New Classicism) was a influential movement in painting as well as other visual arts that began in the 1760’s. Neoclassical paintings usually emphasized on classical themes and subject matter, using the correct settings as well as costumes.
Neoclassical works were serious, unemotional, and heroic. Neoclassical art was inspired by classical literature and history. The surface of the paintings was to look flawless with no evidence of brush strokes.

Based on his body language we can probably conclude that he is looking with astonishment. He is shown leaning on his cane with his hands in his pocket as if he’s studying the landscape. As for the purpose Friedrish intentionally hides the man’s identity in order to compel the audience to look at nature from his perceptive. He’s trying to make the audience realize that understanding nature can lead to Enlightment. Even though the man looks as if he is on top on the world you noticed a mountain in the distance that is above his head. Then realizing that he is and will always be inferior to nature. Another interesting thing about this painting is the way this man is dressed, he is obliviously a man of the upper class.
