David H. Freedman: How Junk Food Can End Obesity Fast food is known as America’s guilty pleasure, but David H. Freedman has found a much better alternative. Obesity is a widespread problem, and there are many serious health issues that come from it. A few major health issues that come from obesity include: heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. According to Freedman, there’s an easy and effective way to decrease obesity rates, and it isn’t by cutting out fast food entirely. A very common effect of obesity is diabetes, which can have very serious repercussions if it isn’t kept under control. This disease alone can lead to many different complications. Some of the major consequences of diabetes are: heart attacks, gum disease, nerve damage, and even loss of eye sight. There are also many mental health issues it could lead to, such as: depression, body dysmorphia, and anxiety. However, Freedman believes that simple changes at fast food restaurants, such as leaner meats and smaller portions, could make a dramatic impact on obesity rates.
Freedman states in his article “A reduction of 50 or 100 calories in a single dish places an eater exactly on track to eliminate a few hundred calories a day from his or her diet— the critical threshold needed for long-term weight loss. Any bigger reduction would risk leaving someone too hungry to stick to a diet program” (948). This proves a very good point. If the changes were too drastic, it would typically turn people away from purchasing the healthier options. Small and simple changes are more effective when it comes to long-term
