Chapter 4 – Case StudyJay Z the Rap Artist and Business Mogul: His Rise to the TopPlease read Chapter 4's Case Study on pages 116-118 and answer the following questions: 1. As mentioned in the case, Jay-Z wears several hats with respect to the several business ventures he manages. What does this say about his time management skills? Time management means techniques designed to enable people to get more done in less time with better results. Jay-Z is known for multitasking. In the text it says research has found that people who multitask are actually less efficient than those who focus on one thing at a time. This was not the case for Jay-Z. Jay-Z took multitasking to a new level. He had many accomplishments including his musical career, co-owning the 40-40 club, partially owning the New Jersey Nets, and creating Rocawear. He also was the CEO of Def Jam Recordings, a founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, and the founder of Roc Nation. He also changed the face of Hip-Hop from baggy to dressy. What does this say about his time management? I would say that this says Jay-Z took time management and put a new face on it. He showed that he knew how to manage things while multitasking and become a very successful person. He analyzed his time well and showed that nothing is impossible. Not even multitasking. He knew his priorities, objectives, and plans and he scheduled them perfectly. 2. Step 1 and 2 in the career planning model are self-assessment and career preference and exploration. What in the case will support the possibility that Jay-Z implicitly did a self-assessment before launching into a music career as a rapper?Jay-Z has always had a sense of his career preference. When his mother got him the boom box and he discovered how well he liked music he put it in his head that he was a entrepreneur just like other successful rappers. This showed that viewed himself as successful.…
In the article, "Nigga? Please", written by Talib Kweli Greene, I relatively agree with his point of view on how different spellings of the N-word will not be affected nor change the meaning, but just only the context of it will make the whole new aspect. His contrary with Piers Morgan is the main reason why I switched from being Pier Morgan's advocate to become his supporter. The example from his story of Ted Joans, how people described him as a "nice, colored man." gives me a brief summary of the connection in context. From our class discussion, I understand that the quote "a nice, colored man" is likely to refer that Black people aren't nice at all. In fact, I will definitely feel offended in a similar situation if I was an African-American. Before reading this article, I have learned that the N-word is originated from Negro, a Spanish…
The landmark Sheff v. O’Neill Connecticut Supreme Court decision will have a dramatic effect on the state of education in the great state of Connecticut. The de-facto segregation of Connecticut public schools over several years has been a troubling trend that has ultimately led to the decision reached by the court. The low performance of schools in the Hartford area has been a concern of many parents and educators. A child’s education is the most valuable tool a child can receive to prepare themselves for the world. The people of Connecticut must recognize the impact that failing schools can have on the entire state. The people in the Connecticut General Assembly and yourself must act to ensure each child has a chance at fulfilling their God given talents. However, I do not believe the Connecticut Supreme Court was correct in saying that it is the…
Kanye West has been the topic of conversation through his seventeen year career as a hip-hop artist, but he is more than just a basic rapper. He is the movement of today's pop culture as he is also, "a producer, songwriter, and a high end fashion designer" (Biography.com Editors). Kanye is not only the best hip-hop artist ever, but he is the best solo musician of all time. For instance, "in the span of three short years, Kanye West went from hip-hop beat maker to worldwide hit maker, as his stellar production work for Jay-Z led to a major-label recording contract and, ultimately, a wildly successful solo career" (Birchmeier). Kanye is having the best career in the music industry and there's evidence to prove that he is the best musician of…
Also how they portray many of the schools to be diverse but in all reality there is no such thing. By the statistic given in the beginning of the article, that is merely enough proof to show there is no diversity in the schools today; which brings us to the main point of the article of schools being separate. Before we can even focus on the part of education, it seems as if the students were more focused on the appearance of their institutions. If an institution looks and feels great, then the students would be more encouraged to learn. Students should never have to bring forth asking questions like why don’t they have a garden, nice parks to play in, or why aren’t they using their gym for extracurricular but more so to just line up. In their minds, they should be entitled to these opportunities. Why? Because they see the schools in the suburban areas have these things, all the things that they…

This is amazing because it shows that Eva Moskowitz cares about not just the education of her own students but is also attempting to spread the resources and allow others to benefit and grow from her educational methods. She believes more high quality options need to be there for students because there are huge amounts of students not getting the quality education they need and there are somewhere near 50,000 students stuck on charter school waiting lists and they won't all get in. Eva Moskowitz' Charter School System is reimagining the way K-12 public education is being taught and is achieving excellent results for her…

As I watched this documentary, it hit me that I am lucky to be sitting in a charter school at the moment because the kids being documented have it way worse that I do. Most of them have no economic support, which makes it even worse to get accepted and continue staying in that school. In my opinion, this was an eye opener and I enjoyed every second of the film. This movie made me appreciate every little thing I have in my life, and to not complain so much about my school, because we all do it even though we have a great school system. I personally despised the fact that most of the children in this movie did not get accepted, because it was clearly shown how much they wanted it and how much they really needed it. Charter schools are exclusive, which does not give every student the opportunity that I have. After watching this, I re-evaluated my perspective on school, and agreed to value what I…
Hooks talks about this divide being the root of the spike in violence we have seen, sense it is comparable to a sports team, not necessarily by physical violence, but verbal violence and vocal displeasures that only makes this divide worse. The other reason I think this idea make sense is because of how relatable it is to our public school system here in America. The schools that are on top, are the schools that continually strive academically because they have the most resources or materialistic items to help them stay on top. The reason they stay there is because they receive the most funding and support from local government because they are the best in the area, which is the same idea as Hooks example in her book where she states that those who are on top get there because of their surrounding financial support. Now, as these schools are on top everyone strives to be like them because they want the best for their students, however, they don’t have the resources these other schools have to make it to the top. This then evokes a divide between the different types of schools because of their financial situation and lack of resources to serve their students and push these schools to envy those who are on…
You may be wondering what a charter schools is. According to The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, charter schools are public schools that are independently operated and are given the ability to use innovative teaching in exchange for assured improved student achievement. A charter is formed by the work of a group of educators, parents, educational leaders, and others that come together and develop the school 's mission statement, guiding principles, governing body, and the measure for accountability. They then submit the proposal to the state for approval. If the charter is granted then there is an agreement made between the state and the school, and because of the charters autonomy there is a higher level of expectation imposed. Not only by the state, but also by themselves, and ultimately by the people as enrollment is based on their choice.…
Another reason why your article is extremely biased is the heart warming moment when Mr.Goddard jumps out behind his office door, assembling a “V” with his fingers to his deputy head Mr. Drew. You have cited this as an extremely childish thing to do. Although most reasonable people in the nation saw this as a close bond between a head teacher and his deputy head who work in an extremely stressful working environment, letting of some steam behind closed doors and away from the students eyes. Although some people may see this as a childish thing to do, I imagine running a comprehensive school can be extremely difficult and stressful.…
The lack of resources for schools constricts learning. Poverty stricken school districts in America receive inadequate funding. In his essay, Barber expands on the idea of poverty in school districts and the result from it. Barber states, “The richest school districts…spend…
The New York Times Article, "Proposal to bus Negroes into Scarsdale Schools Splits Village," was written on December 3rd, 1969. The article addresses the most prominent issue of the era; Civil Rights. In the article, the reader learns of a plan to bus 60 Negro children from Mount Vernon into the predominantly white Scarsdale public school system. The Scarsdale School Board, which would vote on the proposal December 8th, held six public hearings to let parents voice their opinions. Over 600 parents packed the meetings to argue passionately for or against integration in Scarsdale.…
