Summary Of Speaker Of The Dead
The story of Speaker for the Dead is fixed in a world far way from earth, in which two communities exist. The human community, which colonized Lusitania, is bond together by the laws and regulations of the church, laws of God. The second community is made up of the alien species called the piggies, that were there long before the humans arrived. In the Speaker of the Dead, a community is symbolized as something positive that defines the personality of each individual. A Community plays an important role in each person’s life since it has a connection with who they are or who they will become, as Valentine says, “each world changes who I am”. Those actions are more prominent in smaller communities, such as Milagre. In addition, being part of a community or being surrounded by one can have major effects on what that person will become. In the beginning of his life, Marcao was picked on and bullied by his fellow classmates. That led to Marcao becoming a shy and unsocial kid with no friends. It was the kids of his own community; of his own age that lead to Marcao growing up without anyone by his side. As he gew older, and married the only girl whom he thought was a part of his community, Marcao was called a dog up until he became one. No one in his community ever tired to talk to him or become his friend; they all watched him turn into a dog each day more than the day before. The words of his own community shaped and affected Marcao for the rest of his life. Another example would be Novinha, the day that her parents died no shoulder was there for her to cry on and no one tried to think of that day from her point of view. As she was standing there silently in her parent’s funeral everyone thought that she was cold hearted. Later on when she grew older no one ever asked around about her, except Pipo. Pipo was the only person that asked about her and did not believe that she was a cold-hearted person, he saw her as a lost child that was left out by her
