Summary Of Taken By Sarah Stillman
The article, ‘Taken’ by Sarah Stillman, her approach was mostly informative, descriptive, and detailed. But, Stillman does not seem to have a bottom line. She just presents the topic, wants readers to have their own opinion, or what they will want take away from what she presents in the article. She jumps between different stories and different states laws regarding civil forfeiture. She made great points throughout the article which explained the main idea of what she is trying to convey. Stillman does shows how effective her writing possesses but needs to be more specific about what point she is trying to make. The article was not persuasive because Stillman should be more organized when it comes to transitioning into different examples of the topic. One of the cases Stillman presented was about how a waitress, Jennifer Boatright, her boyfriend, and two sons were driving across country. This gets interrupted when they get pulled over by a police officer. The officer claimed that Jennifer’s boyfriend was driving on the left lane for half an hour. The officers searched their vehicle but found a marbled-glass pipe and cash. The article stated, “ According to the police report, Boatright and Henderson ( her boyfriend) fit the …show more content…
As a result, the woman, Nelly Moreira, had to legally fight back to get her seized car returned to her. Even though Stillman used this story as another example of civil forfeiture, however the situation is not quite similar. Stillman did not indicate how she felt about the issue presented. She did bring up things that were stating the obvious but not entirely relevant. Such as, “... devastating for hundreds of families who defend cars for many of the urgent and important tasks of daily life”.
