    Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution were historical milestones in which the ever controversial topic of racial equality was first challenged. In theory, these two movements laid the groundwork for a racially equal United States of America. A country in which every member, regardless of skin color, or race were to be treated equally under the eyes of the law and to one day be treated as equals within all realms of society.     During a time period when slavery had finally come to an end, African Americans still struggled as their opportunities for equality were next to nonexistent. In this time of hardship and unfair treatment, not many of those facing these adversities had the courage to speak out on their beliefs for change; Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois, however, did not possess such fears — both thoroughly articulated their opinions and stood for what they believed was right. Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois shared a few commonalities — both men were highly educated, for example, as well as they both expressed strong opposition against segregation. Washington’s Up from Slavery: An Autobiography and Dubois’ The Souls of Black Folk outline each of these powerful historical figures’ views on segregation and what can be done to end it. Both of these works are excellent examples of rhetorical writing, possessing strong persuasive arguments.     Charles Hamilton Houston was referred to as “The man who killed Jim Crow”. He decided to wage his fight for racial equality within the realm of the school system. During this era schools were segregated, offering facilities to blacks that were inferior to white schools. They had access to a limited amount of text books, and Teachers’ salaries were less than that of their white colleagues. In 1954 Charles Houston orchestrated a land mark case called Brown v.     PART I: The article Tracking focuses on elaborating how teachers and counselors choose to split students into three categories: “fast, average, or slow learners”, depending on test scores (pg.3). Some schools state that they do not track students but that they place them where they would feel more comfortable. Standardized tests were created to sort “students into ability or achievement groups” (pg.11). But the problem with separating students into this so called achievement groups is that some people question the fairness on standardized tests. Some do not believe that the scores are based on meritocratic factors but on race, social class, and economic status making this test bias and unfair. The reality is that “poor and minority students” score lower than do whites (pg.11). Now tracking isn’t the goals for the schools but certain students still are placed do to their scores. In Inequality by design the article informs the public that The Bell Curve actually “measures academic instruction people have had, not their inherent abilities”, or even if they did, they do not inform the inequalities individual faced. The article states that minorities such as: African and Latino Americans tend to be in the lower economical status. The reason for this is because “ethnic groups are socially unequal” (pg.172). The article then goes on to inform us that such factors as freedom have gotten in the way of economical status.
