In the article, “Up Your Grades: How to Turn Those Bs and Cs into As and Bs---In a Hurry” written by Marty Nemko, many examples prove that the reader could use some of the techniques mentioned in one’s life. For one, after observing helpful tips that could come in handy for studying and learning material before a test, Nemko documents to the reader, “Pace the floor while studying hard stuff... Walking increases circulation to the brain” (4). This shows that certain activity during studying can stimulate a way to help one study and remember the material for longer. This is important because many people may have a difficult time studying if someone is doing something during one’s studying time, or if one could hear something distracting that could irk one going on such as fighting, loud music, or incessant vacuuming. …show more content…
This is important because flash cards could help with many different things such as vocabulary, the Periodic Table of the Elements, terms, Word of the day, and other things. Also, one could have the possibility of making multiple choice flashcards if the test one will take will have multiple choice questions contained in it. This shows that even though studying is banal, bovine, incessant, irking, tedious, and usually listless and apathetic, flash cards have proven to be helpful, otherwise the author would not have put that in. According to Nemko, the reader could add this to one’s studying

Putting a scheduled time towards studying will have a big difference on the grades that a student will receive in class. For example, there is a test coming up and the student only has two days to study, so that person must make a deliberate choice to spend time studying or going out with friends, and the grade will reflect the effort. Moreover, spending the time and effort on studying can have a positive emotional effect. People enjoy rewards for hard work and the resulting high grades show the students that effort is truly worth the long hours of reading and…

Two of the tips for effective studying that I find useful are getting enough sleep, and following a regular exercise program. The reasons I think getting enough sleep is a useful tip is mostly because it clear’s your mind and helps you think clearly. According to Palm Beach Community College (PBBC, 2008),they recommend that student’s study should have at least three hours outof class for every hour spent in class. They also said that a student must havea special place to study with plenty of room to work. And students should notbe cramped. They presupposes that study time will go better if a learner takea few minutes at the start to straighten things up. A desk and straight-backedchair is usually best. “ Don't get too comfortable--a bed is a place to sleep, notto study” as what they said. A student must have everything close at hand(book, pencils, paper, coffee, dictionary, computer, calculator, tape recorder, etc.) before starting to study. Students are not suggested to spend on time jumping up and down to get things. The PBCC suggests also that distractingnoise should be minimized however they said that there are some peopleneed sound and some like silence. In this case, a learner must finds whatworks for him or her. Culprits are family and friends. consider a "do notdisturb" sign and turning on your answering machine is the way also to havebetter study habits according to the PBBC..Frank Pogue(2000) did a research project to determine whystudents fail. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey was thatmore than 30 years ago still rings true today--students fail because they donot know how to study .The best advice he can give is to develop sound studyskillsHe said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good studyenvironment, a good desk, a sturdy chair, good light, comfortable roomtemperature and a quiet atmosphere. That means he/she should eliminate allexternal and internal distractions. Second, get a good overview of theassignment before starting the work. Study methods amongst college students today consist of two important things; rereading and note-taking. To the average student, these methods are important to succeeding in any college classroom or so we thought. A study done at Washington University in St. Louis and Furman University proves this idea otherwise. This correlational study done by Mark McDaniel, Daniel Howard, & Gilles Einstein highlights the correlation of successful test scores and study methods by testing three popular methods of studying: traditional note-taking, rereading only and…

After reading this article, I have to honestly say, I have tried all of these techniques from late elementary school right through High School. I did the flash cards, put in the hours of studying. I went to tutoring and attended all before/after school homework help and test prep classes. For me it really didn’t work. The best study method that I found to be effective and helped to produce a better grade was reading over the material right before the test. It was fresh in my mind and I could recall most of what I just read.…

The findings and the common wisdom about good study habits contradict each other. The brain makes connections with the material studied and the background sensations. For example, instead of sticking to one location, alternating the study environment improve memorizing. Many study skills courses insist that students find a specific place, a study room or a quiet corner of the library, but researchers finds the opposite. They found out that a student who studied in a room with a view of outside world did better on a test than a student who studies in a room with no window. Dr. Bjork says that the background sensations enriches the information and slows down the process of forgetting the material.…

Throughout the semester, data was collected in order to analyze it as a source of discourse. I chose to analyze the frequency of Blackboard access per day and the hours in which that frequency is at its highest and lowest. This raw data becomes significant when compared to the general makeup of my average weekly schedule because it reveals important aspects of my study habits. Most importantly though, it highlights my short attention span and the difficulties I experience when trying to concentrate on writing and reading assignments. The effects of specific times of study, exercise, and lack of mundane distractions, have a positive effect on my study habits; therefore, when compared to the data collected, these three factors indicate that my…

However, using the suggested study techniques may yield a positive result. For example, the student scored low in the musical intelligence. It may benefit the student to “take music breaks” (Carter, et.al., 2007, p. 44). The pupil could go to a quiet area and listen to various songs that may help set the mood for the student to focus on what she is studying. This may assist in clearing the mind to become ready for information to be absorbed. Also to help memorize certain knowledge the learner may break down the information and rap it back to herself. This could improve the retention of the data the student is…

It has been proven that students that are successful have a predisposition to go back to their lecture notes as an essential part of their preparation for examinations. This, therefore, point to one premise, as noted by Kiewra & Benton, 1988 and Titsworth, 2001, that it is very much essential for the academic success of students.…
