The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee is the second book in the trilogy series, The Thousandth Floor. I found this book was a very interesting read, because I could relate to what the characters were feeling and the situations they were in.
One of the character developments I loved the most was of Leda Cole. In the previous book, she is seen as a very angry, emotional, jealous, hurt and uptight person. However, in The Dazzling Heights, you begin to see the raw, gritty, sensitive human side of her. I could easily tell that she is haunted by her past, ashamed of it and runs away from the truth.
Leda is relatable, because I too have once been full of resentment and anger. I could relate on how fragile you can feel, and
feeling as though you need some stability in your life. Wanting to find that comfort that you had before, the happy feelings you had once felt and having such strong good friendships is something I could relate to. I could tell that Leda had changed, but she still has that resentment in her, like me.
Simply the fact that Leda has changed her personality from The Thousandth Floor to The Dazzling Heights, shows the reader that in the third book, we can expect for Leda to change again. I believe that she will mature and I will look forward to seeing her do so. Because she has a troubled past, I suspect that she will learn from this lesson and will become an responsible and sophisticated adult.
The idea that The Dazzling Height provoked was Leda’s emotions and characteristics are very similar to teenagers around the world. People feel a broad range emotions, such as anger to happiness. People get hurt and get angry over issues that they can't control. Some people judge others for this as they cannot relate to having such angry, jealousy and resentment, or being in their shoes and therefore outcast them. I have been put into this situation of being outcasted, and sometimes mocked for it. This is relatable to teenagers are they are simple categorized into being “angry” and does not know how to “let it go”.
