Personal Narrative: Ms. Lena Parks
"We admire people to the extent that we cannot explain what they do, and the word admire then means marvel at." This quote by B. F. Skinner shows exactly how I idolize certain people. I admire those who can make me realize who I am, who understand where I stand on and who is not afraid to say what is on their minds. One incredible individual, who I have met recently, changed the way I looked at the world. Ms. Lena Parks has a different air around her that I do not find most in others. I applaud her for the discipline she imposed on herself to reach her goal, for her sense of humor, and for her individuality.

I had the privilege to meet Ms. Parks at the recent Fourth of July Lawn party next house over to my parents house. This lady was twenty years older than my mother, yet she acted like a hipster woman of thirty. She wore the most mismatched clothes I have

Parks is, as I spent more time talking to her, witty. She creates an an atmosphere where it is easy to be comfortable around her. Creating a joke in my case is hard to do, but she allows me to find my sense of humor. She is not a know-it-all. She shows her intelligence by showing her comedy side. Thus Ms. Parks reveals a idea, that life can be much simpler when having a sense of humor.

The most important thing that Ms. Parks ever told me was that "What we want is on the other side of fear." To someone like me, who is starting off in a wide and new world, it does not seem frightening. But Ms. Parks has been in a certain place and time where she could not be herself. How she had to let go some dreams and continue forwards. Her endeavor created a spark inside, to live for the now and to know what the true desire is.

Ms. Lena Parks will always be the person I admire the most. Not my parents, not a historical figure. Just a human being who has lived a long time in this world. Her comic side, her singularity, and her knowledge all come with good will. Her teachings about life will be with me for years to

Just like in To Kill A Mockingbird, the character Park in Eleanor and Park also demonstrates moral growth by putting himself in others shoes and understanding the way others may feel. When Eleanor first moves to her new school, everybody judges her because of the way that she looks. People continue to judge her even though they never gave her a chance or try to get to know her. Rainbow Rowell writes, “The girl just looked like exactly the sort of person this would happen to. Not just new -- but big and awkward. With crazy hair, bright red on top of curly. And she dressed like...she wanted people to look at her. Or maybe she did not get what a mess was. She had on a plaid shirt, a man’s shirt, with half a dozen weird necklaces hanging around her neck and scarves wrapped around her wrists. She reminded Park of a scarecrow or…

I personally hold a great admiration for Anne Sullivan because she related to Helen Keller and made her life better2. To truly touch and brighten the life of a child is one of the most incredible achievements that one would ever hope to reach. Helen had lived a life of complete frustration, absolutely cut off from the world around her. Anne Sullivan changed that. She taught a girl who did not know anything about relationships and love to communicate with a…

As I stood in the swift breeziness of the January air on the foundation of Iowa’s capital building, I took a good look around at all the people surrounding me. To my left was a quirky fearless woman with a sign saying, “Strong Women Scare Weak Men”. To my right a courageous African American woman was standing topless chanting, “My body my rights”. I was in awe at how incredible and how daring all of these women and men were. I mean an entire group of women were standing topless so confident and looked absolutely fearless. As I think about it now there is absolutely no reason why every women/men should not feel this exact same way. Our society has pointed us to a certain “figure” that we should all look like, causing this fear of not looking…

A symbol of dignity and strength in the face of discrimination, [Rosa] Parks came to be known as “the mother of the civil rights movement.” She famously declared, “I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity – for all people.” Rosa Parks once stated, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.” This statement by Rosa Parks has so much meaning to it, and without someone like Rosa Parks, our world would be a different place because we the people have certain inalienable rights given to us by our founding fathers: life, liberty, and the pursuit of…
