Rivera also shows us the migrant workers determination, facing many struggles, including a death in the family these workers still work hard in order to move on and progress in the hopes of a better living. This can be seen in “ The Children Couldn't Wait” in the
lines “...he saw the boy with a hole in his head. And the child didn’t even jump...the water began to turn bloody...”. A similar scene where the mourning for the young can be seen in “The Little Burnt Victims”. “Only the eldest child was saved. The bodies of the other children were charred in the blaze.”
Religion and faith appear to have a major role within the stories. Though here it isn't seen as something great, for many of these Catholics would start praying in what only appeared to be when they desperately needed the help and therefore being and getting to a dejected state in which they look for a promised from God. The mother praying for her son to be safe from any harm in “A Prayer”, the curiosity of a child towards the devil in “A Silvery Night” and in “And the Earth Did Not Devour Him” the boy becomes frustrated with the outcome of his family being sick and challenges his faith by saying “I am certain God has no concern for us. Why doesn't God care about us?”.
