In the court case Aimee Stephens v R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, the plaintiff Aimee was terminated after she reveals to her employer regarding her transition from a male to female. As the plaintiff filed a lawsuit against the funeral home alleging sex discrimination, the defendant asks the judge to grant summary judgment as he claims that the termination was simply because transgender identity is against his belief. In consideration that the purpose of the funeral home is to honor God and that the transgender identity disabled the defendant to freely exercise his religion is in violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act; RFRA, the district court rules in favor of the funeral home. However, the appeal court reversed the decision of the lower court and finalizes the case predicating that "the government's interest in protecting employees from sex discrimination outweighs protection under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act" (Federal Appeal Court Rules for Fired Transgender Funeral Director). In other words, the court stated that it is illegal to use religion to justify the discrimination towards transgender
