Summary Of The Extraordinary Science Of Addictive Junk Food
Communication is one of the essential elements to living. It can be presented in two ways, verbally and nonverbally. In the article, The Power of Context, by Malcolm Gladwell, verbal and nonverbal communication are presented through the way crimes are dealt with, from police attempting to stop crime through mentioning problems to the police physically stopping the crime and dealing with the problems. In Michael Moss’s, The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food, the power of the communication that advertisers use can easily manipulate people into loving junk food which would in create an addiction that consumers would be stuck in for every long time. It can cause the whole community to fix major issues such as crime and health. From the subway station itself, New York had a complete bend on the way it took crime into perspective. It was a turning point that put crime in it’s place and allowed New York City to take back it’s territory. The city with the highest crime rate, a city in the grip of one of the worst crime epidemics in its history. But then, suddenly and without warning, the epidemic tipped” (Gladwell 151). The entire city fell from being the worst crime city, to one of the safest cities to live in. The city was taking back everything and it proved a strong stance for the people living in the city that want to live in peace as well. The idea the Broken Windows Theory presents gets stronger and stronger as more and more people start caring less about maintaining the community and anarchy begins to flow through the veins of the city after that. While looking at New York City’s graffiti issue “worrying about graffiti at a time when the entire system was close to collapse seems as pointless as scrubbing the decks of the Titanic as it headed toward the icebergs, but the the graffiti was symbolic of the collapse of the system” (Gladwell 152). As less people take an interest in keeping the community maintained, the community would lose control of itself and inevitably self destruct. The Broken Windows theory in turn, upholds the system of the community falling into anarchy. Language used for presenting food shows the power that companies have over a community. The company can portray the food as healthy as they want, even if the food is severely unhealthy, and still get consumers to invest in their products.
