Before Che embarks on his expedition to Chile in The Motorcycle Diaries, he was fond of the physical surroundings he had encountered. He describes the ‘sea’ to ‘always been a confidant, a friend absorbing all it is told and never revealing those secrets; always giving the best advice’. Che personifies the ‘sea’ with human attributes to reflect the susceptibility to the central element to what he learns from his adventure. Also, utilisation of progressive verbs of ‘always…absorbing…giving’ underlines the significance of his new knowledge of natural landscapes, thus its impact on his consciousness. This reveals change of physical environments can revaluate individual’s emotive response and perspectives to emerge new values. While the persona’s trip progresses, the tone shifts back and fourth as she finds the sense of sensuousness and realism; ‘nigger…berries cast dark hooks – black sweet blood mouthfuls’. The voluntary, derogatory language ‘nigger’ adds a deeper sensitive meaning of the shade of the berries. Also, sensual imagery aids the disintegration of the juxtaposition of ‘dark’ to ‘sweet’ to display her state of change on the tone of atmospheres. Profoundly, encounters of gaining knowledge of physical surroundings have the ability to influence a person to reassess their values and
