The author of the book The Oregon Trail is Francis Parkman. Parkman was an American historian. This one of his many books on this topic. Parkman enrolled to Harvard when he was sixteen. When he turned 20, he went to Europe to explore and lived in Rome. Theodore Roosevelt even dedicated a book to him. Parkman had great financial stability throughout his life from his book sales and modest lifestyle so he could later have the money to research and travel. He struggled his whole life with an undiagnosed illness. He was often unable to walk, and it caused blindness. He is rewarded each year at the society for American historians for the best book in American history.

Parkman is on an expedition to the Rocky mountains. Parkman and his friend, Shaw, travel by railroad to St. Louis. There is a lot of western movement going on. Then by use of a river, they went to Kansas. There they met Captain C. They wanted to go to the Rocky mountains. They then went to Westport by wagon where they met three people. Two of them were officers in the army. They were going hunting and agreed to travel with Parkman and Shaw. With many delays, they decided to go on a different trail and ended up traveling far out of their way. There were many complications including getting stuck in the mud for a while. Finally, they went on the Oregon trail. They found the first person they had seen in a long time on the Oregon trail. He was an emigrant. The found more people and they all decided to come with them. Storms raged while on their journey. They reached the Platte river. They continued their journey and finally found a place with animals that they could eat. While on a hunt, Parkman got separated from the group. He was lost, but he eventually found his way back. This is when they met the chief of the trading port at Fort Laramie. The Englishmen they were
