The feelings of alienation and loneliness are unpleasant and severe. It can leave an indelible mark on someone’s heart. People have been known to go inordinate length to end these feelings. It hunts them down and becomes part of them. In the short story “The Painted Door,” the author tends to share with us that, we normally take everything for granted and regret later. Wishing we could have the ability to say no and live with any shred of regret, isolation and alienation. Ann is isolated in her home in the midd le of nowhere.     Not belonging can be hard to deal with especially when you are somewhere or with someone that you are not used to. This can have an affect on the individual’s understanding of themselves and their world. In the poem ‘Migrant Hostel’ by Peter Skrzynecki, the individual hasn’t seen the world or felt a sense of connection because of where he lives. ‘Migrant Hostel’ is about Peter living in the hostel right after he has moved from Germany to Australia. At the beginning of the poem, the tone is solemn which allows the reader see his sense of not belonging to the hostel. The collective “newcomers” coming and living in the hostel highlights the fact that Peter lacks individual identity. In the third stanza, the “weather” is used as a metaphor for the unpredictability each day had in stall for the migrants. This means that they had no control over their lives and therefore can’t gain a sense of belonging. In the final stanza, the “barrier at the main gate” is used as a physical symbol which prevents Peter and the migrants from seeing the outside world and alienates them from the rest of the world. This prevents Peter and the other migrants from gaining a sense of belonging.     “No man is an island, entire of itself”. This quote from John Donne, states that no person could live there life without communication from people around them. They must live in an environment where they can communicate freely with someone even if it would be just one person; but what would happen to someone who does not receive or give proper communication?     In the story “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross the title is significant. The title is symbolic, it ties into the plot, and it sums up the main event. When Ann says, “ ‘…It’s going to make the room a lot lighter’ ” she is talking about brightening the bedroom door (49). We paint to bring change and improve upon an old appearance, it is clear that that is what Ann is trying to accomplish with not only her bedroom door, but her life as well. She thinks that she is embarking on a new adventure by bringing change into her home and painting the door white, but in reality she is just beginning a new adventure behind the door. The title also ties into plot and sums up the main event because the painted door is a very significant part of the story. If Ann had chosen not to paint her bedroom door she would have never known John made it home, because John would have never had the paint marked on him. Ann would have thought that John had just collapsed on his way home but the suspicion of suicide is confirmed after she finds the white paint on his palm, “On the palm, white even against its frozen whiteness, was a little smear of paint” (67). It could be by chance that a smear of paint coated John’s palm or it could be a way of allowing Ann to know that his death was no accident.
