The writer also shows the evils of slavery by showing the flawed system of paternalism.
The ideology of parentalism is that the slave owner extends is “fatherly grace” by clothing, feeding, housing his slaves and treating them as basic human beings. Mr. Shelby is one of the rare few who fall into this category.

She states several times throughout the book that she can’t see the difference between whites and blacks. Which matches perfectly with Stowe’s message that christianity is based on universal love. One of God’s greatest commandments was to show love to each other, if people were to actually practice this then enslaving a race or putting one race above another can not work out.
Another way Stowe shows this is through the slaves themselves, when George tells Eliza his plans on running away, she insists that George just needs to have faith in God. In which George responds Stowe… a popular saying among most black atheist. George goes on to state that christianity may work for Eliza but not for George.
