This is a story is told through the character of Jackson Jackson. He is a homeless alcoholic of Spokane Indian descent who finds his grandmother’s regalia at a pawn shop. He sets out on a mission to raise $1000 and gain back this family valuable (Alexie 33). The story focuses on the difficulties Jackson faces and the humor he uses to get through his challenging position. Through his journey Jackson comes across many people who try and help him achieve his goal.
Alexie carries the responsibility of energizing the Native American culture and identity through his pen. This is obvious in the story as Jackson feels that it is his duty to recover his grandmother’s regalia knowing good and well that it is nearly impossible (given his lifestyle). Jackson in this story signifies all Native Americans who lost their culture and felt the sore of being isolated in their own homeland.
