Doc Hendley, the writer and creator of Wine to Water, is an extraordinary human being. Like myself, he was unsure of his life, his purpose, and he spent a long while self-exploring to see what fit him best. He enjoyed the open road and the freedom he felt while relaxing with “wind therapy” in beautiful scenery. Ever since a young age, like Doc, when he was exploring the woods with his BB gun, I was exploring the woods on a four wheeler or ripping waves on a jetski. While he never really fit in with his family, I never really fit in with any of the cliques. He depended on his family, especially his father while he was at Darfur. His father was his “voice”, so to speak, to the states. I depend on mine for emotional support, especially my Pee-Paw and my Grandma. My Pee-Paw means the world to me. I tell him things I would not have thought I would and he gives me such wise advice while also calming me down. My Grandma is the most amazing woman I know. The pride I see on her face when I catch her telling her friends about her only granddaughter is enough to bring tears to my eyes. The most personal characteristic Doc and I share is our compassion for humanity and the constant pull to help someone, anyone in need.
While I feel I will never actually know the hardship he, and the natives, went and go through, he captured the environment and challenges perfectly through his writing. His presentation ripped open the barely sealed emotions of sorrow that were made when I first read the book. The impact of Doc’s presentation is everlasting with reality that the water crisis and inhuman, barbaric attacks are two things that we may not worry about, but many others are.
