Summary about “A Fable for Tomorrow”
In short story “a fable for tomorrow,” Rachel Carson describes a small town in America that was once a beautiful town but then became devastated by pollution.
Writer uses such poetic language to describe the beautiful surroundings at the first of text. The townsfolk and wildlife were live in harmony with each other. The fecund farm, orchards and all kinds of trees were spread the fields. The blooming flowers always could attract visitors’ eyes. The town displayed the different sceneries with the change of seasons. Migrating birds got a number of people to observe them. Some people liked to have trips to this town to go fishing near the clear stream that had a diverse of fishes in the early time.
Then, she tells us how suddenly the change among this town. A mood of darkness created a curtain around the town. Wildlife sickened or died by sudden illness and the farms were infertile. People became ill that doctors were puzzling. The birds disappeared. The hens hardly hatch chicks. There are no bees to pollinate among plants and trees, so there is no fruit. The vegetation blighted .the fish was lifeless and no one came to fish. A white powder lingers on some rooftops. Nothing attacked this town but the people themselves.
Rachel Carson made up a story to warn to people against the abuse of harmful pesticides and protect our environment. If we do not stop using pesticide, the surroundings would deteriorate like the town mentioned in this text. People would be hoisted by their own petard
