Should college Athletes Be Paid to play
These days athletes are getting paid under federal labor laws and entitled to form unions and negotiate wages, hours and working conditions. Most college athletes these days are getting paid under the table according to Kenneth J. Cooper. This article explains why college athletes go to certain colleges. Donald Remy, the NCAA’s general counsel and vice president for legal affairs, says court precedents and tax laws have upheld the status of college athletes as students. “Remy believes that student athletes are not employees under the law, and that they should not be treated as employees either by the law or by the schools they attend”. Tommy Amaker a former basketball star at Duke

If he would of took it and got caught he would most likely get in trouble and duke university would have to get theirs wins and their banners token down. They would have to get their wins and banners taken down because once you violate the NCAA rule that’s what the NCAA does because no one likes someone that breaks rules. I would for sure think they would get in trouble because the same thing happen to Derrick Rose and John wall for taking money from the university. When his teammates found out they were upset because all their hard work before and after the season didn’t even matter anymore. In this article it also talks about college athletes going to college but not for a education for the college experience, and to make it pro. I really agree with this because most college athletes would want to go pro and make the big bucks but sometimes it doesn’t always work like that. For example my cousin didn’t want an education all he wanted to do was make the big bucks and that’s what he did. Many at major collegiate programs never get a degree the NCAA’s own statistics show. Though we do not want to admit it, the NCAA is a business and businesses want to make money. They make money to pay for all their employees and to expand. Though things are not fair and there are many issues that need to be resolved, college athletes are already paid a great amount. Maybe it’s hard for them to see that because they actually don’t get to see the money. Maybe that issue could be resolved by giving them the $25,000 check and not already handling the tuition bills. It would be interesting to see how that could affect athletes and how they react after. Would they blow it and not be able to pay for school? Would many start dropping out instead of finishing…

Richard Sherman, a premier athlete in the NFL, is what one would want to see in a student athlete. In high school, he was the salutatorian(second in his class) and graduated with a 4.2 GPA, while putting in the demanding hours required to be an elite athlete. He attended Stanford and continued his academic excellence, while maintaining that NFL prospect status. In an interview, Sherman was asked his stance on college athlete treatment: “While student athletes are being offered a free education, they do not have the time or enough opportunities to take advantage of that education. These athletes are being cut short and not getting what they deserve.” They are given a scholarship for school, yet they are expected…

For many college athletes, the lure of playing pro sports is intoxicating. Dreams of fancy cars, luxurious homes, tailor-made suits, voluptuous women, and the mental images of a crowded stadium chanting their name is enough for any collegiate athlete to think about abandoning their education for a chance at stardom. Left behind in the frenzy is the much needed college education that no one seems to care about any more. An athletes only hope is to complete a college education first for what life's lessons has to offer later when hard-knocks is the final exam.…

The Controversy behind College Athletes Since 1957, the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has permitted universities to provide athletic scholarships for players they felt would benefit their teams ("Paying College Athletes"para.4). The NCAA’s revenue has significantly increased over the past couple of decades. In 2006, colleges that were members of the NCAA earned $4.2 billion from their basketball program and about $1 billion more than the revenue generated by all NBA teams combined in the 2004–05 season ("Paying College Athletes"para.4). Although college athletes are not fairly compensated, College athletes should not be paid, because of their amateur status, pay in equivalency between sports, and total revenue gains from colleges.…

In addition, college athletes are constructing countless profits for their school and the NCAA by distributing merchandise with their name, moreover, promoting and appearing in video games or interviews. According to Tyson Hartnett from The Huffington Post, “Athletes earn their schools hundreds of thousands of dollars, increase enrollment, and if they do well, provide a recruiting piece for generations. Top NCAA executives are getting $1 million per year, while an athlete can’t earn $50 from signing a few autographs”. However, schools are signing and selling jerseys with the athlete’s names on them, despite the fact college athletes cannot acquire sales that they are creating because the NCAA and the school forbids…

“Athletic departments in colleges nationwide generate massive revenue and depend on the success of their athletes for income. For example, the Southeastern Conference became the first conference in 2010 to earn over $1 billion in athletic receipts, Taylor Branch wrote in The Atlantic last year. The Big Ten was a close second with earnings close to $905 million, he wrote” (Rebecca Barry n.p.). Opposers of paying college athletes always seem to complain “Athletes are already on scholarships, they don’t need to get paid “when in fact scholarships exceeding $20,000 may seem like a lot but in reality it only covers tuition, housing, a meal plan, and textbooks (Tyson Hartnett n.p.). No matter what type of scholarship college athletes are normally dead broke. But top NCAA executives make 1 million dollars a year; coaches on average make $100,000 a year plus bonuses for wins, records, etc. (Tyson Hartnett n.p.). Opposers also say “It is unfair to students who are paying tuition and don’t get paid to go there, for athletes to get scholarships and to get paid to go there”(Anna Simmons n.p.). When in fact the non-athletes are not bringing in money to the school like the athletes are. Universities bring in millions of dollars every year with their athletic programs through donations, ticket sales, media rights, advertising, ect. Colleges make all this money, yet most of it is not used for the benefit of the college athletes (21 Reasons…

College athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. These athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are these athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are very vulnerable to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. The problem with this is that the athletes are not only getting themselves in trouble but their athletic departments as well.…
