The Coddling of the American Mind
A lot of scientists and universities are concerned due to new tendency among student to protect them from the real world. For instance, some activists in university want to persuade people that some words, statements and thoughts are offensive for some students, thus these words should be removed from everyday usage, at least in university. Such approach created a discussion across the country whether it is necessary to protect student from such words or behavior.
First of all, actions and words that could harm the feelings, beliefs, ethnicity or race are called microagression. Because of the too liberal attitude of the students they start to think they could control university and they could avoid some irrelevant, in their opinion, words and terms. However, a lot of scientists argue that these movements are explained by simple oversensitivity of college and university students. Thus, their movements are senseless.
Secondly, students state that their activity is aimed at protecting students who have different psychological traumas before and in order to refresh them, students started to forbid some words. From psychological perspective it is not totally right to do. The only …show more content…
In fact, activists challenge not only language but also sciences that use the language, for instance, literature, philosophy, history. It is senseless and dull to forbid the words in the book of 18th century. It was a language that was common among people of that period of time. In addition, some of the classic works of American literature contain some of the words that are forbidden now, however, it is irresponsible to just change those words.
