In Joss Fong and Joe Posner’s youtube video , “ The Economic Benefits of Being Beautiful”, the directors describe that being beautiful will give you a better life. According to Fong and Posner, they describe that being beautiful will give you the chance of getting hired at a job, earning more than an average person, and a better shot of getting promoted, and being loved by others. If a woman has those ideal beauty standards that even men with flaws will love a beautiful women, but if a woman does not have those standards, she will not be beautiful or be loved. In the media, the most beautiful are thin, have a hourglass figure, long hair, flawless skin. Then the whole world will love and adore you. Due to the media, I witnessed many women shopping at expensive clothing stores to feel beautiful, just because they show a beautiful model promoting the product on television. Women spend tons of money on any products, yet somehow they still feel ungrateful about their physical appearance. In Shari Graydon’s article “ The Pursuit of Beauty is Harmful”, the author describe that women who are exposed to these ideal beauty standards are more likely to have a low self esteem. According to Graydon, she states that “ Dozen of peer-reviewed academic studies now document the degree of disatisfaction women and girls experience with themselves after exposure to unrealistically thin and beautiful female models and actors”. Indeed, I believe that the more we see these advertisements, the more likely that a woman will feel ugly and fat about herself, when in reality she is beautiful the way she is.
