Summary: The Rape Of Nanking

The industrialization of warfare not only helped modernize, but also helped war become much more strategic. However, it also led to many innocent civilians being caught in the crossfire of their countries' feuding. Civilians were often targeted and subjected to mistreatment due to multiple factors, which include their race, nationality, and/or their association with the war. This led to countless instances of innocent men, women, and children experiencing immense suffering and struggles at the hands of both soldiers and cruel leaders. Many of these civilians were subjected to not only inhumane treatment but also dehumanization. The suffering they induced included unfair imprisonment, forced labor, sexual assault, and even death. The massacre took place over the course of six weeks, where hundreds of men and women were murdered and raped by Japanese soldiers. Up to 300,000 Chinese civilians were killed as a result of this war crime. The soldiers who committed these heinous acts felt little to no remorse for their actions, stating they had ‘fun’ committing these murders and assaulting these women, treating them as if they were animals with no basic human rights. A statement made in the article, “The Nanking Massacre,” states the following, “We had fun killing Chinese. When we caught some Chinese civilians, we either buried them alive, or pushed them into a fire, or beat them to death with clubs. When they were half dead, we pushed them into ditches and burned them to death. Everyone gets his entertainment this way. It’s like killing dogs and cats. We sent out trucks into the city to seize women. Once we captured them, we took turns raping them.When we were raping them, we looked at them like they were women, But when we killed them we just thought of them as
