The norms and standards of society go unnoticed by many athletes throughout the country, who believe that the game acts as a platform for the expression of their own individuality. As every fans are awed by each and every personality that walks the field, a greater amount of influence is granted to the athletes. They are shown as "respectable" figures that are equivalant to our modern day gods. This thought process is an exact depiction of Campbell's third rule. By putting an extremely god like sterotype on athletes we are creating a social order where athletes are the elites. Other qualifications that are needed for a progressive society areleft behind and the vast majority of society dreams of becoming a world famous athlete. The author of “Against Football” Steve Almond claims the NFL is immoral. The NFL has proven to be the biggest sport and “thing” in America taking the same amount of time in certain people's lives as religion. Our obsession with players in the NFL making miracles with their bodies is what attracts us to the sport almost like an addiction. In his ted talk Steve Almond's states that football is a moral undertaking and that football does not only serve as entertainment but also does things to us. The opinion piece, “The Athlete as Agent of Change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton discusses how athletes use their platform to address injustice. “Sport has always been a way used to challenge convention.”(Bunch and Skorton, paragraph 3). Athletes have the power and ability to change an idea or convince people of their ideas. The position they are in allows them to use their fame to promote their beliefs and causes they support. I believe that athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda. One reason why athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda is because athletes’ platforms allow them to easily persuade or sway the fans and audience to the idea they support. “Sport is a powerful way to do so because…

Imagine 96.9 million people watching the same thing, ingesting copious amounts of food and beer, and cheering maliciously for a squad that may or may not be their team of choice. I grew up in South Africa where the Super bowl is not nearly as big as it is in the United States. I was naive to the idea of watching any big game besides the World Cup. When I moved to the US I did not know what the Super bowl was. 198 countries watch the Super bowl and it is aired in 25 different languages across the world. I can’t help but think to myself that this is just a game and I don’t really care who wins, even though my surrounding suggested otherwise. I am sitting in a room full of diehard Seahawks fans. All of the furniture has been moved to each wall in the little room so that everyone can see the big flat screen TV. Beers are cracked, chip bags are opened, and we are about to watch the most watched TV program in United States history, the Super Bowl. Bronco’s fans are turned away and the guys roar at them as they try to enter the small apartment. “If you are not supporting the Seahawks you can stand up and get the hell out” one of my friends yelled as non-supporters walked away. Bud Light is the beer of choice in the room and Doritos are the chip of choice. As the game is about to start the room ignites and everyone is immediately fired up. The commercials play through the loud chatter in the apartment and they seem to be unimportant except for a few that are considered memorable. The Super Bowl is a spectacle and there is nothing else like it. The Super Bowl is a large reflection of American culture. Through media, commercials, and the atmosphere that this game creates, patriotism and masculinity are unintentionally the main aspects of this spectacle.…

Athletes have always been at the center of popular culture, they are looked up to as idols and representations of human perfection. While athletes entertain us as spectators, they have become too large for their own good. William Moller, the author, has shown solid facts and engaging social commentary that brings the public to support his claim of how athletes are held too high in today’s society. For example Bo Jackson he’s use to be a professional baseball player and also a professional football, he was phenomenally excessive in both sports, but joining 2 professional sports at once, which is definitely a mammoth gaffe, just think about it a professional sports season is exceedingly penetrating, he had to duple that compression, because he’s on 2 sports teams and both sports season start at about the same time. If he focus on one sport than he might have been on all the record books and become a hall of fame, and an elongated career which guarantee he could earn way more money than he have right now . Instead he was materialistic and imprudent he wanted money come in sooner so he had contracts with 2 sports team. He did have a record to be the first man to have 2 sports contract. But because being in 2 different professional sports and going through a variety of injuries he only had a 2 year career. It’s not probable for a person to emphasis on 2 sports and be an all-star in both sports. So after athletes saw this they admire him being able to have a 2year career with that kind of strenuous schedule, but after him there was on no…
