1. Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with:

* Children

Effective communication with children is important to make sure that they understand the language of learning so that they can grasp concepts and ideas, actively take part in problem solving and successfully develop their own ideas and opinions. It is important for children to be able to feel welcome in the classroom environment and valued within the school. Encouraging children to ask questions, give their own answers and contribute to class activities will help to develop a positive working relationship with the children. It is also important to listen to children speak so that they know that their views and opinions are valued by the teacher. This also encourages them to actively volunteer their views more readily. A positive relationship with a child will encourage positive social skills and appropriate interaction with other children and adults.

* Young people

As with children, developing a positive relationship with young people is important in effective communication. If you are seen to be in ultimate control of everything and set limits and parameters to tasks and the learning environment you are unlikely to get positive results from your pupils. Whereas straight, simple answers to questions are fine for young children, encouraging thought processes and giving more detailed answers are more suited to older pupils. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t simply dismiss it, help and encourage the pupil to use different resources to find the answer. The information should be appropriate to their age and developmental level. Supporting their learning in this way strengthens a positive teacher-pupil relationship and reinforces the message that you are there to support them. This approach will help them to demonstrate positive learning

    Communication the ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions accurately, one of the many different aspects to a practitioner’s role when supporting children’s learning skills. Communication involves listening, questioning, understanding and responding using them to interact with children, their families and your colleagues. When communicating with young children attentive listening is very important as some children’s needs might be better understood by what they don’t say but by the feeling their facial expression show or body language express.     Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children young people and adults, by communicating effectively you are setting a foundation from which your relationship can build from. It gives each other a mutual understanding of each other, the type of person you each are, your personalities and perceptions. It develops a trust so the other person feels confident in what you tell them and that they feel comfortable talking and if necessary confiding in you. They also need to feel confident that they can ask you to explain things again and in a different way, if they don’t fully comprehend, most importantly the individual needs to feel safe and secure. It helps you to understand the individuals learning patterns from which you can create programmes and activities to promote there learning style; to find their style you may use Kolb’s theory 1984. It is also important as it helps you to understand the individual’s needs, this could be a simple as not understanding what has been said to or asked of them, or it could be that the individual has a physical or learning disability by communicating effectively and developing a positive relationship you would be able to work together to create a positive and effective learning programme/activity and environment for them. Being able to do all of this helps you assess the individual’s needs, from there you are able to create a personal programme for each individual that is adapted to all their educational needs so that they are able to get the best assistance in their education. For a child it is important to them to know you are there to listen, support and advise them and not to judge them, they are contending with learning a lot of new things and often in a new environment.
