Sure On This Shining Night
On November 27th, I attended the University of Alabama’s chamber choir and women’s choir concert. The concert started at 7:30 with the chamber choir. A chamber choir is made up of both males and females. The conductor bowed and the concert began. Before the members of the choir began to sing the conductor set the key for the song on the piano. The first song that they sang was not listed in the program. It was more of an introductory song.
Sure On This Shining Night was the next song that they sang. The conductor for this song was different then the conductor for the first song. The tempo for this song was moderato. The voices in this song were mainly baritone with spirts of soprano and alto. There were no instruments in this song, but a piano was used to set the key for the song.
A second conductor stepped forward to conduct the next song. The title of this song was I Dream a World. The tempo was moderato. There was a mixture of baritone, soprano, and alto voices in the song. The dynamic was a soft piano and it also has crescendo in some parts. The song flowed smoothly throughout which is characteristic of cantabile style.
The last song that the chamber choir sang was titled Hark I Hear The Harps Eternal. This song was my favorite

The first part was called As Dew in Aprille. The tempo was moderato. This song was not very long at all. There was a short pause that allowed the conductor and singers to change their sheet music and then the second song began. It was titled This Little Babe. This song had a style of brillante. There were so many different things going on at once. The soprano singers were singing one part and the altos were singing a different part. The music would start off soft and gradually get louder and louder and then go back down. The dynamic was crescendo. Both of these songs had one instrument, the harp. This final set of songs were my favorite. I had never heard a harp prior to the

The next selection of music that was sung was the piece “Festival Sanctus”. Originally intended for a SATB choir the piece was modified to fit the ensemble. A sacred piece written in Latin and adding to the feel the piece is also in a minor key. With a syncopated and bouncy rhythm the song lifted the spirits of all in the auditorium. The voices blended and seemed as if there was one big person singing…

The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light. The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound. This piece made the audience feel excited and eager to hear more because many of the audience members recognized this…

On December 1 I returned to the beautiful Max M & Marjorie S Fisher Music Center to hear the renowned jazz singer Dianne Reeves Christmas Time is Here performance. My seat was far higher than the last time I went but luckily my height proved to be useful to see the stage. Running late, the announcer came out and told us his experience with Dianne and the wonderful performance we were about to see. After that the pianist Peter Martin, bassist Reginald Veal, guitarist Romero Lubambo, and drummer Terreon Gully came out to the stage and started set up. They started playing their own warm up melody's, each melody similar in tone and rhythm and as they continued, I realized they were playing a song,…

The last piece conducted was “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” by David Maslanka. The tone colors of this piece had a pinging and jingly. There was much imitation in this piece and it reminds me of a twilight movie. The rhythm was long and smooth. The tempo was played in andante and the dynamics started in mezzo piano and crescendos to mezzo forte.…
