The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is a spectacular feature film directed by Frank Darabont who adapted Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (Different Seasons collection). First things first, the poster of the movie has these words “Fear can hold you prisoner, Hope can set you free” on it. This quote clearly explains the power of hope freedom. Now moving to the movie itself, there have been many amazing prison dramas in the past so how does Shawshank Redemption filled with so many clichés differ from them? The movie is spread across a long period of time letting the simplest things take a fuller meaning the smallest details have their importance. This is what makes the main difference. In a place where everything has…
Burton ended the decade with three films; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 2007, 9 in 2009, and Bones in 2006. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and 9, were extremely successful and loved by viewers and critics. They went on to receive several awards and nominations at the award ceremonies such as the Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards. In 2010, he directed another successful film, Alice in Wonderland, which received two Academy Awards for best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. He then later followed up with another film, Dark Shadows. This film did not do so great. It received mixed reviews from critics for both, its plot and performance by the actors. Burton continues to find success with his dark, artistic,…
The film moves in such a neat and precise way. Wonderfully wise performances by the actors of the film especially by Freeman and Robbins. They connect with their characters Andy and Red so well to create something powerfully moving. They show the deep messages of the power of friendship and how hope springs eternal. “The Shawshank Redemption” is a film you surely don’t want too…
To be completely honest, I would have to say that majority of the acting was very mediocre. I know it wasn’t supposed to be like something off of Broadway but I expected a lot more, and I felt like only a couple of actors came through with that. The acting was not terrible, but it wasn’t spectacular either. I felt like some characters were not putting their all into their characters. I also felt like some people should not have been casted into the roles they had received. Many times a background character would outshine a main character during the performance. Pertaining to the acting, I think that the fact that it was a musical added more stress to the actors which consequently could have placed a strain on their acting abilities. This is because they were most likely more concerned with their vocals. Something I did like in their acting was the fact that they used little children, I found that very adorable.…
They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door.…
With the type of environment fostered by this strong community of committed thespians, there is no chance that this show is anything less than a spectacle. Before opening night, all actors seemed high in spirits and giddy with excitement for the first show the next night. Theres a certain comfortability they have with each other that seems to be unique to the theater department. It is difficult to understand just what exactly that factor is, but David Ybarra (who will portray Friar Lawrence) says, “one of the things about the theater community is that its generally a very positive community to be around…no matter who we have, we’ll always be joking…
“Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a well known play and musical capturing the audience’s attention as to what can happen behind closed doors. I will be reporting the background context of the musical and how Victorian life could influence the storyline and characters. I will cover historical, social, political, economical, cultural and technical aspects of the musical. “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (which I will now refer to as “Sweeney Todd”) originated from a play by Christopher Bond, then a musical with a book. The music and lyrics for the musical was written by Stephen Sondheim and was first performed in 1979. The book was written by Hugh Wheeler. “Sweeney Todd” is set in Victorian London, primarily Fleet Street. The main characters are; Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Nellie Lovett, Judge Turpin, Beadle Bamford, Johanna, Anthony and Tobias (Toby). The themes of “Sweeney Todd” are mainly love and revenge but other themes are underlying throughout the story. To start reporting my research I will discuss the historical findings and its origins in greater depth.…
William Shakespeare 's Macbeth has always been considered one of the literary worlds most celebrated tragedies. It is arguably the darkest and most gruesome of his plays. The protagonist, Macbeth, is the poster child for tragic hero, "a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy" (www.dictionary.com). And until recently we were satisfied with that At the Cannes Film Festival in 2001, a low budget comedy was unveiled. It was called Scotland, PA. This film was written by a first-time director, Billy Morrissette, and depicts the familiar story in a surprisingly different form.…
It took a serious amount of time to get to the point of no return. But when it happened, wonders occurred. It was my greatest role so far. I am also a bass singer so playing a bass lead was extraordinary for me. I hope that when I’m older that I will get to play the role again. I chose Sweeney Todd as my artistic experience that stands out because not many teenagers get to do a show like Sweeney Todd while they are in high school. Despite all the stereotypes of the show, I wanted Sweeney Todd to be realistic to the audience. I wanted the audience to truly pity everything this Sweeney went through and all he lost throughout the show. He was the first anti- hero I ever got to play. There was so much background work that had to be done on this character that I overanalyzed the entire script. The character allowed me to finally realize that acting isn’t really acting. It is the ability to respond to other actors and interact with other actors based on scenarios a character is put in. Acting isn’t supposed to be comfortable and Sweeney Todd helped me realize that. It’s the ability to act appropriately or even inappropriately when faced with an uncomfortable situation. The situation I was given was so large that it took me three months of work to finally accept what Sweeney had to face. I experienced more emotionally with that character than any other character I’ve played. It was the most work I’ve ever put into a character. Becoming my…
Launched in 1975, the musical Chicago, created by a talented pair of composers and producers that included both John Kander and Fred Ebb later known as Kander and Ebb. Kander was born on March 18, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. His exposure to music began at an early age as a result of having had tuberculosis as a baby. During this time, Kander was cut off and not allowed to be around other people, that separation developed his ability for sound. Kander started piano lessons at the age of six. His parents and brother would often spend evenings playing the piano and singing. Kander’s first successes came while he was a student at Oberlin College, where he attended with James Goldman, a lyricist he had known since childhood and together produced songs. In 1956 Kander started his Broadway career by filling in for another pianist who was on vacation, from that point on he became a pianist on many musicals and his career continued. In 1962 he met Frank Ebb, who was also a lyricist, together a great songwriting partnership started that lasted over forty years, together having several successes and becoming the longest Broadway partnership for music and lyrics. The most successful musicals include Chicago, Cabaret, Zorba and New York, New York. Kander had a career in the film industry as well as having written multiple scores for a wide variety of films over many years. Kander and Ebb worked for forty years producing music for Broadway. Trainspotting is a 1996 film telling the dark comedic story of Mark Renton and his hand few of friends in the UK and their battle with heroin addiction and breaking the law. Personal note this film is one of my all-time favorites, so I was incredibly excited to write a paper on it. The story opens in Edinburgh Scotland, Mark is running form security guards after he had just robbed a store with his friend Spud. This is the scene where Mark goes over one of the central points of the movie “choosing life”. Mark states other people have chosen life with a stable marriage, house, 401k etc. while he and his friends have chosen heroin addiction and the crazy life that brings. Right after this scene we are introduced to Marks other friends, Sick Boy the scammer, Tommy the clean one of the group, and Frank who is the psycho one. All the guys (minus Tommy) spend their days getting high on heroin with their drug dealer Swanney.…
The film Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is placed in the action and comedy genre. Liman works well within the genre because of his experience from prior films. Liman uses the comedy within the film with these special characters having ordinary problems. Action films usually have the main action around the male hero, women usually play the role of a romantic interest or accomplices. An action film also includes many physical stunts, car chases, battles, and destructive disasters. Almost all action films the character struggles against the odds such as, an evil villain or a life threatening circumstances. Mr. & Mrs. Smith fall into the screwball comedy genera that focus on the battle of the sexes where both try to outwit or outmaneuver each other. They also…
You're more than a disorder or a trauma or an experience. Sometimes, no matter how much we try to cope on our own, we pretend we are fine, and how normal we try to be. We need a connection with people to learn how to mend past pain. Charlie had been abused, emotionally manipulated, and even felt guilty about Aunt Helen’s death. I think he needed to learn that there were people out there who knew he wasn't normal and that he wasn’t always fine because he was trying moving forward. It's really what we're all doing, searching for answers, healing pain, and trying to be the master of our own destiny each day. As funny as it sounds, the book made me want to learn about Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had never seen the film, but I am willing to…
The plot interacted very well with the songs. The songs entwined with the plot so well, it is extremely hard to imagine this musical as just a play. The songs were placed the perfect amount of time apart so they did not feel sparse or crammed. The plot was just like the movie, but there were songs that were not in the movie,…
