The atmosphere in both The Wave and Swing Kids went from being fun and exciting, to mean and disrespectful. Before The Wave started, students were free to associate with whom ever they chose and people felt that they could speak freely. It was a pretty safe environment and Gordan high was just an average school. After The Wave the school had become a dictatorship, and felt militaristic. If you were not part of The Wave you were made to feel scared, the culture became full of fear and the students were pressured into joining. In the film the Swing Kids before the HJ, the Nazis allowed Swing cubs to still run, and people were able to socialize with non-Jewish people. The Nazis were judgmental of Swing Kids and killed anyone who was Jewish or people who helped the Jewish, even if they were German. Arvid, Thomas and Peter were all good friends at the time, and they all stood up for each other. After the HJ the Swing club was closed down and people were not allowed to listen to Swing music anymore.
Before The Wave the clothing was very simple and plain. The clothing was casual and informal. Girls and come boys had long hair. An example is Robert Billing who had uncombed long dirty hair, and a un tucked shirt. After The Wave everyone started to dress better and more sensibly. Ben Ross started to wear suits to work, and Robert Billing started to dress better and combed his hair. Before the HJ in Swing Kids the clothing was kind of baggy and American style clothes. Men wore long pants and long coats to keep them warm. The boys all had a different style. The girls wore dresses with different patterns on them and their hair
