SWOT Analysis-NUCOR

Strengths * Nucor holds a leading marketing position in North America in the steel producing industry. In 2011, Nucor held the most shares in the markets for rebar steel, cold finished steel, structural steel, steel joist, and rebar fabrication. * Nucor is North America’s largest steel recycler. The company uses scrap steel to produce steel products. Nucor’s recycling efforts lead to higher efficiency and better productivity. * Nucor is known for producing new, and more efficient, technologies. They created the first electric arc furnace, to commercialized thin casting production. Inventions like these can keep Nucor competitive and also generate more revenues by cutting expenses.
Weaknesses
* Companies in the steel industry are very vulnerable to price fluctuations in raw materials. If the price of steel rises Nucor may not be able to honor the quote they gave a customer for a project. * Almost all of Nucor’s facilities are in the United States, making it harder to compete with international companies. The shipping costs of steel can be extremely expensive, so it is not profitable for Nucor to export a lot of products.
Opportunities
* Nucor can continue to expand their portfolio by launching more Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) making facilities, like the one that opened in Louisiana in 2011. These facilities use direct reduction technology to convert natural gas and iron ore pellets into high quality DRI used by Nucor’s steel mills ("Louisiana Economic Development"). * If Nucor repositioned itself by entering in to the international market they would be able to compete with some of the larger global competitors. Opening manufacturing plants in Asia could capitalize on lower labor wages, as well as create new markets for the company.

Threats * Many major steel corporations have undergone mergers in the last decade, creating a few international market leaders in the steel industry. Larger companies with

The U.S. steel industry is comprised of three distinct groupings of companies – integrated steelmakers, minimills, and specialty steelmakers. The main difference between them is the stark divide in capacity as well as what they actually manufacture. Integrated firms can produce 107 million tons of steel through reduction of iron ore, and minimills have a capacity of 21 million tons, and these businesses utilize a scrap melting process. Specialty mills have a capacity of 5 million tons, and for the purpose of this analysis, the focus will remain between the first two types of firms.…

Nucor Corporation is one of the largest steel producers in the United States, and the largest of the "mini-mill" operators (those using electric arc furnaces to melt scrap steel, as opposed to companies operating integrated steel works with blast furnaces). (Nucor distinguishes itself from the rest of the steel industry with its use of scrap steel, a fact that makes Nucor the largest recycler in the nation.[25] Furthermore, the company uses modern steel making techniques allowing Nucor to employ fewer workers. The workers that Nucor does employ are all independent of unions; these workers have a vested interested in the productivity of the company because a significant portion of their compensation is based on their own productivity.[26] In addition, Nucor has recently focused heavily on acquisitions to increase production capacity and to make the company more competitive in the global market.[27]…

    Nucor Steel Case Study

Nucor maintains its competitive advantage through its low cost production, and their use of electric arc furnaces and recycled scrap metals to produce steel. Prices for scrap steel was not higher than $137 until 2004, and reached a peak of $438 in 2008 before the economic recession hit. In 2009 and 2010 prices were $303 and $351 respectively, and then in 2011 hit an all-time high of $439. With their per unit cost structure relying heavily on these scrap steel prices, their ability to achieve greater profitability is reduced. Nucor needs to find a way to off-set these rising prices in order to maintain its low cost strategy.…

Nucor utilized two lines of business; the first line was composed of six steel plants that made steel joist frames. The second line was composed of four steel mills that used a industry leading mini-mill technology to supply the joist plants at first then included customers. Each division operated on its own (selling, manufacturing, accounting, personnel). Nucor’s immobility was exceptional as well, using around 150 trucks to ensure on-time delivery. They strategically placed plants in rural areas near their target markets, I feel that Nucor has a great…

Nucor operates in a relatively mature market. Their productivity and cost efficiency through optimized operations help moderate their pricing. Nucor’s strategy is to acquire a source of raw material or integrate some new technology into their operations. The goal is to expand in higher value-added sheet markets. Nucor’s strategy to become competitive includes introduction of new steelmaking technology and seek growth through acquisitions and joint ventures to source one-third of its raw material requirements. The company is leaning toward acquiring new business that increases production capacity, participation in downstream steel projects, and provides resources of raw materials. The objective is to rise against costs of raw materials, reduce on imports, and better manage…

Steel was ahead in the steel industry they disagreed with competition and thought that it was unreasonable (“Iron and” 1). They did, however, buy out many companies in the process of building up United States Steel Company. One of the largest contributors was Carnegie Steel; this was what helped set them up for success (“Iron and” 1). U.S. Steel was also able to expand into other industries by buying out other businesses, for example, Marathon Oil Company and Texas Oil and Gas Corporation let them develop in the gas and oil industry (“Iron and” 2). They also took over the iron industry when they acquired American Bridge and Lake Superior Consolidated Iron Mines (“Iron and”…
