Perhaps my family response to immigrating to the United States was to do our best to improve our condition in this country based on we did not perceive this experience as unpleasant but as an opportunity. My mother immigrated in 2010 looking to improve her financial situation and pay her debt. My mother went to work at a factory despite her educational degree because she was determined to pay her loans. My mother then decided to stay and married because she believed that we would have more opportunities to progress in this country than our own. For my family, the United States meant the chance to reach their goals and to improve their lives. However, my family perception differed from others on that we did not only came here to pay for my mother debts and improve our financial status but to seek for a better education, job opportunities, and progress. My mother experiences also shaped my meaning of an illegal immigrant. I defined an illegal immigrant as a person who comes to the country and stays without being able to improve its condition but to work to cover its basic needs (Blumer, 1986 & Herrera, 2012). My definition of an illegal immigrant merely came from a stereotype obtained from the media.
The symbolic interaction theory also explains my family meaning of education and financial stability. We classified education and hard work as one of the many ways to progress based on a social constructivism that shaping our definition of success and stability (Robbins, 2012, p. 7). We all associate a good job with a good education level and hard work.
