These three social problems are hot topics in the field of sociology and there are three main explanations that sociologists try to use to explain them, structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism, and conflict theory. Out of these three explanations the one that best explains our society’s current social problems of violent crimes, drug and alcohol abuse, and poverty is symbolic interactionism. In stories such as Jungle Book or Tarzan, both Mowgli and Tarzan have a sense of self. According the theory of Symbolic Interactionism, this is both true and not true. This is because they have a sense of the “I”, a subjective self, but not the sense of “Me”, the objective self. The reason being is because the “I” is self-created because of how we respond to others, and the “Me” is a created self-image that was created by society and taking in that role (Griffin 63).…

The problem with racism is a complex issue. It is difficult to characterize it or place it in one category due to its far reaching effects and implications. Racism remains a serious social problem, as some people think that certain racial and ethnic categories are smarter than others. Sociological theory is defined as a set of interrelated ideas that allow for the systematization of knowledge of the social world. This knowledge is then used to explain the social world and make predictions about the future of the social world. The conflict theory is a major sociological theory mentioned in the text that racism applies too. Social policy is generally thought of as tackling ‘social problems’, especially the welfare of the population. In order to understand this relationship, sociologists distinguish between social problems and sociological problems. According to Worsley, a social problem is some piece of social behaviour that causes public friction and/or private misery and calls for collective action to solve it. For example, poverty, educational under-achievement, juvenile delinquency and divorce may all be seen as social problems by members of society, and governments may be called upon to produce policies to tackle them. Worsley also said that a sociological problem id and pattern of relationships that calls for explanation. This might be something that society regards as a social problem, for example, why some people are poor, commit crime, or fail in school. It can also include behaviour that society doesn’t normally regard as a problem, for example, why people are prosperous and law-abiding, or succeed at school or remain happily married.…

The sociological approach to addressing social problem provides a different perspective of those social problems than other disciplines. Sociology demands a look at the self created structures of a society that result in the creation of social problems (Gurrero, 2011). This perspective allows sociologists to examine the relationships between the macro view of society and the micro view of society (Gurrero, 2011). The study of the individuals and institutions that compose a society through objective and systematic analysis allow for sociologists to understand the root causes of social problems (Gurrero, 2011).…

To begin, symbolic interactionist study how people use symbols to develop their views of the world and to communicate with one another. Symbolic interactionist analyze how our behaviors depend on the ways we define ourselves and others. Everything is a symbol and without symbols humans would be no more advanced than the animals that surround them. The next sociological perspective is functional analysis. The central idea of functional analysis is that society is one “whole” unit made up of interrelated parts that work together in harmony. This perspective means that society is composed of many different parts, in which, each part has a role to fulfill in order for society to function normally. There are three types of functions: manifest, latent, and dysfunctions. The manifest functions are deliberate actions that help the system. Latent functions are unexpected functions that help the system. The last function of functional analysis is dysfunctional function. These functions are damaging but, inevitable to society. The third sociological perspective is conflict theory. This perspective on social life basically means that society is composed of competition. This competition or conflict is not always expressed, but it just lies beneath the surface waiting to sprout at a moments notice. When I think about conflict theory I tend to think of the old cliché, “Survival of the fittest.”…

The sociological approach toward social problems differs from other approaches in that the sociological approach includes a focus on self-consciousness and building awareness that an individual’s interaction with society can oftentimes be influenced by forces outside of the single individual’s control or area of power. The author of one of our texts, Anna Leon-Guerrero, who is a Professor of Sociology at Pacific Lutheran University, writes that “Unlike any other discipline, sociology provides us with a form of self-consciousness, an awareness that our personal experiences are often caused by structural or social forces (Leon-Guerrero, 2010). Certain problems are considered significant, or more significant, than other problems due to a sociological perspective that gained prominence in the 1960’s called “Social Constructionism.” This perspective states, when attempting to explain why society places more significance on some issues rather than others that “They (the issues) become real only when they are subjectively defined or perceived as problematic (Leon-Guerrero, 2010). Another sociologist, Denise Loseke writes that, “Conditions might exist, people might be hurt by them, but conditions are not social problems until humans categorize them as troublesome and in need of repair” (Leon-Guerrero, 2010).…
