Symbolism
The color red was used throughout the movie to symbolize many things. One of the many things that it symbolized was death, mainly the death of the main character who did not realize he was dead. The color red also represented other aspects which include grief, ghosts, and safety. In this Essay i will talk about five major symbolism themes of the color red that were used throughout the movie.
So when Cole was invited to a birthday party, he was wearing a jumper which was red and the red balloon were both anticipating the ghost sobbing in the closet. It has also been said that the image of the balloon rising up towards the light through the center of the spiral staircase represents a spirit going up to heaven , with the staircase representing life’s journey. The fact that Cole wears red here could be symbolic of his situation at this point, he is naive and uncertain, but is drawn to the voices nonetheless. Red is the colour of the spirit world, and so by wearing it he is intentionally drawing spirits towards him.

It seemed that they were holding a conversation, but after some research and people explaining that scene to me, i realized that in fact the were not holding a conversation but only that the mother was talking to herself. One question that kept popping into my mind after i learned that Malcolm was dead, was how was he able to talk to Cole’s mom ( this was before i knew that they weren't actually talking). So i believed that Cole’s mom was dead too, but apparently not. At the end when the director was talking about how he used the color red as symbolism, i thought that it did stand out but the way they organized, used or interpreted the color was clever enough to fool a lot of
