Symbols And Motifs In Mark Haddon's The Curi

The Curious Incident has several motifs throughout the novel, the colors brown and yellow being two of them. Christopher mentions numerous times that he does not like these colors for many reasons. “H. Not liking yellow things or brown things and refusing to touch yellow things or brown things,” (Haddon 46). When Christopher first tells why he does not like them is when he is talking about his behavior problems. “Mrs. Forbes said that hating yellow and brown is just being silly. And Siobhan said that she shouldn’t say things like that and everyone has favorite colors. And Siobhan was right. But Mrs. Forbes was a bit right, too. There are major male roles in The Curious Incident, as the main character is a male who is being raised by a single male parent, “So father went out of the room and picked up my clothes from the bathroom floor and put them on the landing. Then he went and got sheets from his bed and brought them out onto the landing together with my shirt and my jumper,” (Haddon 119). This quote shows that Christopher’s dad has had to do the stereotypical American woman’s job, as he takes care of Christopher.
