Synopsis Of John Green's 'Looking For Alaska'
“Looking For Alaska” By John Green. Dutton Books. Fiction. This book is all about the story of Miles “Pudge” Halter, a gawky, intelligent teen who has a major obsession with famous last words. In search of what Pudge refers to as “a great perhaps,” he makes new friends, enemies and discovers himself. Before Pudge's adventure at Culver Creek Boarding School began, Pudge was just a typical nerd living in a small town in Florida. His studies were most important and he loved reading biographies. So when Pudge announces he wants to attend Culver Creek, “Why?” was into everyone's mind. “So this guy, Francois Rabelais. He was a poet. And his last words were ‘I go to seek a Great Perhaps.' That's why I'm going. So I don't have to wait until I die to start seeking a Great Perhaps,” he explains.

So, when Pudge is moved into the rebellious world of Culver Creek Boarding School, he is only looking for one thing – his “great perhaps.” In the end, he walks away with an understanding of life and death, a best friend and bittersweet memories. Along the way he meets Chip (a.k.a. Colonel), who introduced him to Takumi, cigarettes, booze, and Alaska Young (a.k.a. the love of his life). The more he gets to know Alaska the more he loves her.

He is one of my new favorite authors and is definitely extremely talented. This book was pretty clear throughout the whole story. Nothing was difficult to read or impossible to understand. It moved swiftly which made it an easy read, and kept me interested the whole time. You stay in the real world when reading this book, it faces real life situations teenagers go through. It reflected reality well because anyone could face some of the situations these teenagers faced. Peer pressure, moving to a new school, tragedy and school in general. It truly displayed realistic situations that readers could relate

The story makes me realize that with maturity, comes difficult choices, and you must always be wise. Things like this happen every day and people always think, “Oh it won’t happen to me,” but you never know. I would recommend this book to my friends because I think the story line would influence their choices greatly. I think it would give them a better perspective on making good…

I have always been a big fan of Otto Kilcher, he is off the show Alaska The Last Frontier. Otto is a very funny guy and will try anything. Otto is my favorite person on T.V because he is very interesting. I met Otto at a store in Alaska, he asked me if I could read the label on a jar to see when it expires. After that he asked me if I wanted to see his homestead. So I decided to go to his homestead and we went in his old Dodge truck. After about a two hours we were on his homestead and you could see the ocean and there was lots of land.…

It is, quite honestly, one of the best-written books I have ever read, ever. I think it took me such a long time to read because the first few pages or so didn’t really attract me, in terms of plot, but Chabon’s sentences, my goodness. His sentences are flawless. I want to marry his sentences. Or, in the words of Tracy Jordan, I love his sentences so much, I want to take them behind the middle school and get them pregnant.…

When reading this book it really made me think about the life we live today in the United States. How most of the young people don’t think about what could happen to them if they get into gangs, also if they keep on doing bad things like he did. At the beginning the book was really boring and hard to read, but once I got pass Chapter 1 and 2 it’s when all the action started to hit and when it got really interesting. I could really relate to this book in very different ways, like how at the beginning of the story he did not speak English, and how he felt around people who did, how he would think they were talking about him, and how because he did not speak the language people made fun of him, were racist to him because of being Mexican and how they kept him apart from everything else. Also how he lived in el barrio* this reminds me of where I used to live in Cuba, a poor neighborhood with lots of lomas* and people just hanging around because they have nothing else to do as there are no jobs for them. I believe this is a really interesting book that every teen should read. As we are starting life most of us don’t know what we want, and some think that being in a gang is “cool”. Also at the end of the book the author tells about his current life as a writer and how much it has changed. This told me that everyone could be successful in life no matter what you are right now you can always change your lifestyle and be…

I chose the novel “Looking for Alaska” by John Green, because I already read a reading sample in my English lessons in Germany from this book and I really liked the style of writing the author used. I also chose this novel, because many of my friends said it was a good book and worth reading, besides the fact, that the book is well-known for some of its quotes (“If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane”) and the awards it won (Michael L. Printz Award). The author is also known for his book “The fault in our stars”, which is another one of his four books.…
