Synopsis Of The Play 'The 39 Steps'
Do you like spoofs over very serious and scary movies? If so then The 39 Steps is the play for you. The 39 Steps is a fantastic show that takes all of the Alfred Hitchcock movies and makes fun of them. It was performed by the Wimberley Players at the Wimberley Playhouse from 9/18/15-9/20/15. This play had so many great things about it but a few of the highlights were the costumes, the believability of the actors, and the great usage of such a small amount of props.
In this comedy we follow our hero Richard Hannay (Danny Mosier) as he tries to prove himself innocent of a crime that was made by a pack of spies. As we follow Richard Hannay we meet some unusual and corky characters. With a cast of four the actors were fantastic at portraying multiple

This actress blew my mind away with all of the characters she portrayed with very different personalities from sneaky spy, to down hold country wife, to a stubborn woman even though all these characters are very different Elisabeth Anne Jean made the audience fall in love with every single character. Another fantastic actor who in my opinion should be a comedian in large productions is David Bisett. This talented actor portrayed Crofter, Mr. Memory, Professor Jordan’s wife, and so many more little characters. My eyes were drawn to him every time he was on the stage. He made you want to look at him because you never knew what he would next. The cast in whole was fantastic and played off of each other well. Comedy is not an easy thing to accomplish and these actors did it with a breeze. The lead of our show Danny Mosier was a phenomenal actor. I could not see another person play this character he had all the right moves and …show more content…
The costumes captured each characters personalities very well. It went with the time period that all of the Alfred Hitchcock movies were set in. I loved how they would change Richard Hannay costumes throughout the play because at the beginning of the play he is in this very nice robe to show his rank in the world, but as the story goes on he changes into lower and dirtier types of clothing. I thought it was a very creative to show us another way of what the character has faced in his journeys. The costume changes between the two clowns of the stories was clever and comedic. There is one scene when they are at the rail station and the only difference between the characters was their hats. They actors were talented to enough to change everything in their postures, accent, and the pitch in their voice but the only true difference is the hats. One of the actors was very smooth with their constant costumes changes on stage was Kortnee Mcdowell she was the female clown, professor Jordan, and an unlimited amount of other characters that the show simply would not have been as amazing without. She was on top of what props and outfits were where and what time. You could tell by just watching her she had a very precise technique that helped slip in and out of the costumes without fumbling over

The style in which the play was performed was presentational although there are some parts of realism because situations like these actually do happen. The actors played multiple characters and morphed into each one. The morphing shows visible changes of character. They had great versatility of characters and played each one with passion for the role. The facial expressions they used seemed to add to the way they acted and made us, as an audience believe their roles much more. Other presentational aspects include the use of direct address and poetic narration throughout the performance.…

The way she acts with excitement and humour, is outstanding and I personally think that she is a gifted actress. The rest of the cast were pleasing to watch, and were also competent at acting.…

When I first saw the play I payed no attention to the costumes but enjoy the overall play, which mean that costume designers did a good job. According to professor Landis, she says that costumes should not be the main focus but improve the overall environment of the play. Once I look back to picture of the play, I start noticing costumes. I find it beautiful how all the characters wore emerald, lively clothing to add to the wonder of Emerald City. I also notice that Elphaba has the famous wiked witch hat but the costume designer made modification that make it appear like the orignial hat, but it looks more suiting to a beautiful younge women. This production used a lot of change of set design as well as the use of expensive effects. For instant, during the scene were there is flying monkeys, the audience not only see a million monkeys appearing as if they are going to take flight but the huge dragon on top of the stage comes alive. During this scene the light technicitan uses red lights on the stage and the background is Elsabub castle. The use of red lights, loud sounds, and the…

Costuming is also something that changes widely throughout different performances of Shakespeare. The costumes can be modernized, or the actors can wear the traditional pumpkin pants. One example is the lion in the mechanicals’ play. The lion should look nothing like a lion. This makes it funnier when they make the announcement that it is not a real lion. One option is that the lion look almost like how a small child would dress if he wanted to look like a lion. It could have a mop on its head with whiskers drawn on its face and a yellow sweat suit. The fairies could also have some interesting options for costuming. They could be traditional fairies with wings and crowns, but another way to costume them would be to have them dressed in trench coats and hats to make it seem like they are trying to hide among the humans.…

Patrick Barlow adapted this story further into a theatre production; however he turned it into a comedy. With a cast of only four they used physical theatre and many Brechtian techniques to turn a famous spy story into a joke. Apart from the actor who played Hannay all other actors constantly change roles. They do this by a quick change of costume sometimes in front of the audience. For example in one scene Hannay is on a train desperately trying to avoid two police officers asking if anyone had seen a man who matched his description. Hannay was sharing a carriage (they were sitting on two suitcases rocking backwards and forwards to suggest this) with two other commuters. One of them say they “will be back in a jiffy” stands up mimes leaving the carriage and then swaps his bowler hat with a police officer’s hat turns around and starts talking to the other two men in a different accent showing his change of character.…

The piece was extremely clever how they only used four actors during the entire show. This brings me onto costumes. The costumes in this production were very bare and essential for quick changes while on stage, and this gave the play a comic feel because they changed on the stage in front of the audience. Many times the costume was a plain suit and the actors played different characters by simplistically putting so a hat, coat or a prop. I enjoyed this because it helped me associate different characters with the little bit of costume they had.…

The acting in this play was great. The actor I was looking most forward to was Brooke Shields. Honestly don’t think that she was that great. It could have just been the character of Morticia, but after it was all over I felt like she stood out the least. To be fare it could have just been that she was having a bad night though because when she was handing out autographs after the play she apologized for not doing well. The other star, Roger Rees, was pretty good. He definitely was not my favorite part of the show, but he did a good job playing Gomez. He was somewhat dry, but he had enough to keep him memorable. Adam Riegler was the young boy who played Pugsley. He did an outstanding job and unfortunately wasn’t a huge part of the show. I would have liked it if they had involved him in a few more scenes. The best part of the show was definitely Rachel Potter in the role of Wednesday. She blew everyone else out of the water in terms of her acting and singing. She was the true star of the show in my opinion. The way she acted really made the audience want things to work for her and the character Lucas. The actors Heide Blickenstaff and Adam Grupper did a good job in the role of Lucas’ parents. I feel that they did there job in being good character foils to Gomez and Morticia. Jesse Swenson was another actor that I thought did great. He played Wednesdays love interest Lucas. He did a fantastic job and was almost as good as Rachel Potter. Another role which I was disappointed in was Brad Oscar…

Although Claire was the main character, the actor who played Millet had the best acting on stage. They way he switch between the two personality was amazing and hilarious. He portrayed the character really well and had me believing for a bit that he actually had a dual personality. His entrance on to the stage in every scene was perfect, every time he can on he was really enthusiastic and his enthusiasm did not fluctuate too much in the play, even though he was not playing one but two characters.…
