Pankaj Ghemawat views globalization as a positive influence, but that it is not as prevalent as most people may think. Ghemawat also sees globalization as a way to share ideas, but does not think that the sharing of ideas is actually happening the most people think it is.
What measures of globalization do each use to prove their position?
Both Tabarrok and Ghemawat used graphs and data to prove their points, but they used differing types of
graphs. Tabarrok used graphs showing the history of globalization as well as the present effects of globalization. For example when Tabarrok used the graph titled “Growth Washed Away the Great Depression” showing the GDP Per Capita in the United States from 1900-2007. Ghemawat, however, swayed more towards factual graphs of modern globalization, using percentages and polls. An example of this is the graph Ghemawat used showing cross border interactions around the world.
What do the two speakers agree on?
Despite having very different opinions on globalization, Tabarrok and Ghemawat do have some similarities when it comes their thoughts on globalization. Firstly, both Tabarrok and Ghemawat see globalization as a positive influence on the world. In addition to their positivity towards globalization, both speakers feel as though globalization has room grow from its current position.
On what do the two speakers disagree?
Tabarrok and Ghemawat have varying thoughts on modern globalization, as well as their definitions of globalization. Unlike Ghemawat, Tabarrok believes that globalization is happening right now all over the world. Ghemawat, however, has a very contrasted opinion. He believes that globalization still has a very long way to go before it is a worldwide normality. In addition to Tabarrok and Ghemawat’s differing thoughts on globalization in today's society, they have slightly different views on what globalization means, or at least choose to highlight different aspects of globalization.Tabarrok chose to focus on the sharing of ideas between nations, and based his opinions on globalization on this. Ghemawat chose to focus on the sharing of goods and the social interactions across borders, and based his argument for globalization, or the lack of it, on this.
