The second amendment states that “A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.” (2010). To take away any citizens guns is to take away this right that has been given to people so clearly in this amendment. Due to all of the recent shootings that have taken place in the last ten years, gun control laws are now being questioned by the government. Due to these recent horrific events that have taken place the proposed proposition by the government, school involvement and mental health issues are all things that should be addressed in more depth before making a final decision on gun control laws. Anytime there is a crisis that has taken place, it is up to the president to take matters into his hands and come up with a solution. However his plan to stop the tragic shootings by choosing to “make background checks for gun buyers universal, putting a ban on high-capacity magazines and a ban on so-called assault weapons” (Metzler, 2013) is not the answer. Making background checks universal includes making them a law for all sales including for private sales. This then causes an additional cost to the seller along with additional time and responsibility. It also means that the buyer must give out all of their personal information to a complete stranger which opens doors for additional illegal activity such as fraud or identity theft. Placing a ban on high capacity magazines will also yield no real results. The only thing it will do is make people carry more regular magazines that take no time to switch out. His final proposition of banning assault weapons will also not bring about any results but could cause more problems. In the recent shooting hand guns have been the weapon of choice.
