The setting of the film is fictional yet it takes a different approach to combine two entirely different cities of San Francisco and Tokyo together. The animators blend in the East and the West cultures into one big future city. One gorgeous scene shows Hiro and Baymax soaring through the sunny, cotton-candy colored sky over the Golden Gate bridge that has its own Tokyo twist to it. The film quickly takes a two-shot of Hiro and Baymax faces, emphasizing their freeness into the sky. San Fransokyo incorporates San Francisco's fog-blasted atmospheres and the impressive beauty with Tokyo's extraordinary skyscrapers. Big Hero 6 took a risky chance at creating something totally new that Disney has never done before. The development of the new animated software they use is hyperion. For example, the virtual city looks real due to the composition of the natural bounce of lighting and shading of the buildings like they would portray in real life. Throughout the film, the skyscrapers of San Fransokyo are particularly striking. The roads are filled with people walking on sidewalks that have cherry blossoms blooming, neon lights dangle almost everywhere at night as if the audience are in Tokyo. More importantly, it delivers the film's uplifting message of the diverse characters who are all relatable to believe in yourself. Some reviews have criticized the film because they think that in the end it fails as a Disney Marvel action movie. For example, New York Post reviewer Kyle Smith argues that the film untimely fails because it is "marred by slow development, bland characterizations, limp jokes and meaningless action scenes thrown in at random" (Smith). However, Plugged In reviewer Bob Hoose argues that "It's less about powered-up whiz-bang and more about "somebody has to help." It's less about superheroes and more about exploring the idea that a diverse group of friends becomes something of a makeshift support system—a family—for a kid who's lost everything and everyone" (Hoose). Watching Big Hero 6 makes the audience realize how much they love each other on an emotional level. Big Hero 6 deserves four out of five stars.
