One of the most starch character development can be observed in Ava Bigtree. In the beginning of the story, Ava has a vast imagination. Ava’s imagination is fueled by the nature surrounding her. She has the ability to see every situation she is in through a positive lens. The author uses Birdman as a catalyst in Ava’s development and the loss of her innocence. Once Ava is raped, her imagination begins to dwindle away. Eventually, the nature that once fueled her begins to force her into a new mindset. “But if I observe my friend and fairy man from a different perch of my brain, I saw the birdman could be an anybody” (Russel 283). After this pivotal moment, Ava starts to notice the nature she lives in is not as magical as she once believes. When Ava is awakened to the danger of Birdman, her perspective of nature and the world around her begins to dull. “We walked back from the hammock in silence. We passed the same trees and their same orbiting bulbs the same white flowers the same sour creamy ponds but everything looked changed to me now. The moon had a bad charge” (Russel 291). One terrible experience, in the swamp, causes the small child to lose her former identity. The event shapes the way she feels about herself and the world surrounding her.…

Sarah changed drastically in “Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes”. She didn’t trust anyone and it took a great deal for her to learn to trust the minimal people that she did. After her father was no longer in the picture, her life was much smoother. She learned to trust Eric and the people that wanted to help her. I feel that she achieved more confidence and didn’t let her scars get to her anymore. Hope changed quite a bit in “Hope Was Here”. She learned to accept things for the way they were. She acknowledged that her mother was never going to change and her perfect father wasn’t going to show up at her door anytime soon. She found that her life was splendid the way it was. Mark Brittain from “Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes” also changed. It took a suicide attempt for it to happen though. Before he changed he was so uptight and harsh on himself. He believed that he had to be perfect in his eyes, but more importantly in the eyes of others. Once he changed he seemed to be a more enjoyable person. People are always changing for the better or worse, change is…

Since he originally had intentions on bettering himself it was disappointing to see his morals pushed aside. However, I was able to relate to him since his pain and anger was so understandable. Another character I found interesting was Dr. Miller. He had become educated and wealthy and even respected by some, however he is still treated unequally and still longs to be considered an equal among both whites and blacks. Even though Josh and Dr. Miller were both inspiring and heroic to me, the mulatto character of Janet was the most moral and determined throughout the book. She endures the shame of being outcast from the family heritage that she was entitled to, is repeatedly rejected by her white stepsister, and eventually loses her only child as a result of the savage acts of the whites. Regardless of this, she overlooks it all and acts purely on a moral level of what is the right the thing to do for humanity. She disregards the issues…

Every book is riddled with characters. Normally they are not these morally rigid and unable to change. They are quite the opposite. It is common to see in novels characters changing drastically, particularly their values. They can go from being greedy to exceptionally generous and empathetic individuals, like in popular children stories like A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens or How the Grinch Stole Stole Christmas!…

This defiance in their world is unheard of, and because of Tally’s bravery and awareness, Tally has the potential to expose the government’s corrupt practices and officials.
