After the flood was over, God told Noah to be fruitful, increase in number and fill the earth. Noah was also told that humans would rule over all creation, including the animals. Meat would now supplement the human diet. Noah was told not to take a human life or eat blood. While God now allowed the eating of animals for food, he forbade the eating of animals that died of natural causes. God did this because of the health concerns and the dangers of consuming blood. God wanted a holy respect for blood, both human and animal. It is later brought up again in Deuteronomy 12:23 when it says “Be sure you do not eat blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat.” This command helped to prevent cruelty to animals.
