The documentary, TB Silent Killer, takes place in a town name Swaziland in Africa. In Swaziland, many individuals are dying from tuberculosis, it has become an epidemic and has spread to many villages. The intent of the documentary to bring awareness, bring light on the severity of TB, inform the public, how an old disease has become resistant and is spreading. People in Africa are fighting for their lives, they are being isolated, kept away from their homes and family, to prevent the spread of TB. The problem is that the disease is already in the air, many have already been exposed to it. Based on my past nursing experience, I come to realized that education is key. You must put it out there for the public to see. Bringing awareness to the community, on how a simple a treatable disease could have been cured if followed proper medication regimen. As nurses, we need to educate the public of the more complicated strands TB if they do not follow the proper care regimen. As a community, we need to globalize health care, we need to educate preventative care measures, beginning with school age children, from simple hand washing techniques, to proper nutrition and exercise. We are finding ways to bring health to our community, educating families on the importance of immunizations. You are looking for determinates of health and disease related to a specific population and you apply ways to improve on it. You go out there and see what the community is lacking and help improve it. As a school nurse, you start educating the school age children, at the primary level. You are assessing children to catch any abnormalities early on in age, such as acanthosis nigricans, which is a sign of prediabetes. From immunizations, to vision & hearing, to spinal check for any deviations. As a school nurse, you make sure that the children are screen for TB, and if tested positive, she refers them to an affordable care center, and educates them on the importance to taking all the medications until completed. You are also, educating the children on hand washing, nutrition, hygiene, to bicycle safety. As a community nurse, you bring awareness to the public, such as if it’s flu season, you remind them of the flu vaccine, teach the importance of covering their cough with a sleeve or shoulder instead of their hands. You teach them how germs are spread and how to prevent them from spreading. If there is an STD outbreak you bring awareness to the community at the high school level, start teaching preventative measures.
