Health Disparity Essay

A health disparity is defined by the Surgeon General as “a difference in health outcomes across subgroups of the population . . . that are often linked to social, economic, or environmental disadvantages”(n.d.). Healthy People has been trying to decrease the amount of health disparities since Healthy People 2000. They started with want to reduce the amount of disparities. Then for Healthy People 2010 the want to eliminate health disparities. Now for Health People 2020 the goal is to “to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups” (n.d.). With any goal there must be a plan and strategies to achieve this. In my opinion to be able to achieve this goal there must be prevention health care access for everyone. Along with being able to know who is at risk and educating the community and clients in an effective way. Being able to decrease and/or eliminate health disparities we must know how to prevent them. By having professionals trained to do preventative screenings, tests, and education for those who may be at risk could help achieve this goal. But in order for this to be successful you would need to be using the proper health literacy and communication for each individual. But in order to do so, we must be able to identify those who may be at risk first. Reaching out to the community by doing screenings in public places like a library, grocery store, and even in schools. Could help identify the specific populations that may need help more than others in those specific areas. To improve health for everyone we must not discriminate. So being able to go into the community and working with non-profit organizations could help as well. While doing all of this there must be research and data being collected. So we can analyze
