- General question we have on the federalists
Citzen: he is bound by the duty of his country, however; you must enter politics or partisan acts, you always have to choose an opinion you are supporting. Political action always seems to be partisan. You come to the aid of your country you ocme to the aid of liberty and your party.
The radical Marcuse accounts for blaming liberals protect the liberty of free speech and it is more unselfish.
Voltaire said, “I’ll defend to the death your right to free speech.”
He did NOT die in the protection of free speech.
Five problems with the Federalist:
• 1st- the problem of faction
• 2nd- the purpose of American govt.
• 3rd- Union
• 4th- republicanism
• 5th- good government
• Faction or “partisanship”
• written in Federalist number 10 written by Madison
• Offers a very clear outline
• It is a great example for how to write our papers
• especially a problem for govt. which means a govt. by the people in a democracy.
• pop. govt. makes for a tolerant society, people are able to abuse their liberty to the detriment to society or to the detrimental rights of other citizens are factions.
• Faction: A number of citizens whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.
• A majority can include a faction and this is the most dangerous
Two ways of controlling the effects of factions:
Do not allow the majority to collaborate or gather together to meet.
