The Federalist Papers where some of the most important essays ever written in the united states, in terms of political papers, because they were used to convince the states to ratify the new constitution. The Federalist Papers No.10 was written by James Madison and is entitled “The Union is a Safeguard Against Domestic Faction and Insurrection”
The main purpose of the essay was to illustrate why factions were dangerous to the new government of the United States. Factions are what Madison defines as “groups” of people who have the same interests. Madison says that the number one characteristic of factions is the unequal distribution of property. And that because of the division of property in society the largest faction will be the poor. The two main factions that Madison worried about was the minority, the rich, and the majority, the poor. Madison says that factions are inevitable, that in any republic people will form into factions. That the republican form of government works to prevent factions because a larger number of representatives prevents the attempts of the few. It is also more cost-efficient to run a single national government than to support 13 separate governments. The republican form of government established by the Constitution is superior to other plans of government. Furthermore, the proposed plan of government allows for shared responsibilities with state governments, which are still located closer to the people.
