Teachers Shortage In America
The United States is going through a crisis, teacher shortage is increasing year by year. In some states, the shortage is so high legislators have lowered the requirements to become a teacher. Having fewer qualified educators will affect the children since they are not receiving the education they deserve. This will also affect society as there would not be productive citizens to continue the future of America. One of the biggest reason shortages are happening is the low wage educators receive. When comparing how much money a doctor or lawyer make compared to teachers, most people chose higher paying jobs.

    The American Federation of Teachers was founded in 1916 by eight local teachers. However, the American Federation of Teachers had lost majority of their members by 1920. The union fought hard for tenure laws for long standing teachers as well as teachers who were being sought after for having differing views and beliefs than those in the political arena especially during World War I. Over time, strength in the union’s leadership helped more members to join and saw a climb from less than 5,000 in 1920 to 32,000 in 1939. The school spending difference is often significant because teacher’s salaries are based on their experience and approval or college degrees they might have earned. Low poverty schools have more experienced and higher paid teachers, than a high poverty school where the teachers can be inexperienced, low salaries and a high turn over rate. Research in Baltimore found teacher’s at one school in a high poverty neighborhood were paid on average $36,600 a year, where at another school in the same district the average teacher’s salary was $57,000 a year in a low poverty neighborhood. If both schools have twenty teachers the difference in dollars available for the two schools is over $400,000 a year. Think about how much equipment, supplies, and higher quality teachers that much money can provide for a school. School funding in most states is tied to the wealth of the neighborhood. Communities and students that are at an economic disadvantage often need the most help and are unable to receive the quality of education provided by other schools.     In today’s economic turmoil, schools have been receiving budget cuts across the board. A perfect example would be Lamar University of Texas whose budget was cut by 15 million dollars (Moore) just this year. Furthermore Lamar University lost 120 employees (Moore). Since schools are getting money taken away from them they have to seek elsewhere to recuperate what they have lost; as a result colleges and universities have increased their tuition. We see that the rise in tuition is keeping low and moderate income students from ever attending a higher education institute (Zaho). On the same note Kindergarden-12th grade schools now have more students per classroom, meaning more students less teachers. This effects how much a teacher can teach a student overall, and how much attention one teacher can focus on one student throughout the year.
