Among the budget cuts that the city council is considering is a 5 percent reduction in funds for secondary education. As the principal of one of the junior high schools that could be affected, Stella is worried. Such a reduction would almost certainly mean teacher layoffs and fewer teachers teaching more students.…
Public schools are government funded, which allows for low enrollment costs. By having government funding, the public school is able to provide the students with more resources that benefit their education. A larger budget to work with allows the public school to have many extracurricular activities for the students to participate in which can benefit a student beyond the educational needs they receive in class. When a public school has a fundraiser or is presented with a donation, that money can go towards specific resources needed or wanted within the school.…
Mesquite school district suffered along with many other school districts in the state of Texas in 2011 due to cuts in funding across the board. Each district chose which way would be to solve the problem. Dallas ISD offered retirement incentives, MISD choose raise freezes and other cuts in costs. MISD’s quest for excellence does not stop with its classrooms and staff the district received a “Superior” rating under the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, a financial accountability system for Texas school districts (Weaver and Tidwell LLP, 2011).…
According to document B, the cost for substitutes decreased by nearly 76%. Schools would be saving money for separate needed school funding. Also students will have less excuses for late turn-in assignments the next week. During a normal 5 day school week, students have been losing interest in their work. There have been several cases of detentions inflicted on students who have fallen asleep in class. That can be changed if students have a…
In addition, Schools need to save money and save up to install new things when school songs. They waste money on the air conditioning during the summer so Kids can feel relaxed. They also have to pay the teachers their time for working with the kids. The school can waste more money and they may run out of money of paying all year.Nine month schools have to pay less because they don't have to play for the air conditioning, teachers, and more.…
The writing process for all papers no matter the type or topic is a long and tedious process to craft the most appropriate paper. The process is such a tedious one because it is a process that is dependent upon a multitude of steps that must be followed so that the paper is written in a way that flows but is also understandable. For this particular paper, a research paper that was based on the book, Not Buying It, by Judith Levine was quite interesting because the topic that I choose was the effect of state budget cuts on educations and to what extent they damage a school's ability to function well. I tied this in with the month of may in Not Buying It, where Judith discovered the importance of public libraries and how they offer a multitude of services, especially when one needs these services free of charge. This correlates with my topic because budget cuts both to schools and libraries hurt academic performances tremendously, however state education budget cuts are my focus because I felt that these financial cuts are even more damaging to schools.…
The fields of healthcare and education affect almost everyone. The odds of seeking medical care at some point in time are high, and most individuals will receive some form of education. In Louisiana alone, Governor Jindal’s proposed budget will cut millions of dollars from education and healthcare. Although these cuts are necessary to reduce the national budget deficit, they will have devastating financial effects on both systems. In the healthcare arena, the budget cuts will reduce Medicaid reimbursement and reduce or eliminate funding for many medical care programs. With regards to education, the cuts will reduce funding which will force schools to cut staff, eliminate…
The movement to “Take back the schools” was a movement initiated by a group of Chicano students demanding for a change in their schools system in East Los Angeles California. The 1960’s was a time when Mexican American students were suffering from neglect and discrimination in their schools. It was obvious there was a problem with the school system of education only one out of four chicanos was completing high school. Students were separated into different classes by their IQ scores. Students with a lower IQ were put into shop classes instead of being put into the academic tracking where they would be prepared for college. The dropout rate from school was really a push out rate of Mexican Americans dropping out from school how it’s mentioned in the film. Their culture was not addressed and their schools were not doing much for them. Their academic advisors would set them low for their future by advocating how service jobs like the ones their parents were doing were a practical choice for Mexican Americans.…
For over a year, budget cuts known as the sequester have been taking place in the United States. It has affected nearly all government funded departments and programs. Because of rising national debt, budgeting programs wisely is becoming increasingly important. However, sequestration is unwise because it requires departments to make extreme, unnecessary, and ill-considered cuts within their budgets. Among the departments taking the hardest cuts are the Department of Defense and the Department of Education.…
One of the biggest changes that would come with year round schooling would be increased use of the school building during times where it was traditionally not used at all. The most obvious time would be during the summer months. Costs for having to run the air conditioning during the summer and heating during the winter would shoot up. This would more so affect larger public schools who adopt the staggered class approach. Since the classes are staggered, when some students leave for their break, others will be returning for it. This would ensure that the school is in constant use all year round, excluding special occasions such as holidays. This would not only increase the costs for maintaining the school property with the air conditioning and heating, but it would increase the costs for school lunches. With some students always being present means there must be food everyday of the year. The money to pay for lunches, one way or another, will have to come from the parents sending their kids to school. Another way parents would be affected economically is through rising house prices. Studies show that the cost to purchase and maintain a house in a neighborhood near a good school is much higher than house costs near schools that don't produce very good students. One of the benefits…
Instead of getting one huge break at the end of the year you get multiple breaks. Not only is it beneficial for students and teachers, parents avoid the pricy trips and over populated places when it comes to vacations. Because students would still be in school when the summer times rolls around. Like most schools they follow a single schedule, with a year round school year they follow a multi task schedule which means teachers alternate every break so…
There are many past and rising issues involving public school finance. The public schools system is funded through federal, state and local taxes. Each state has different formulas to distribute funding from state and local taxes. Federal funding does contribute to the rising cost of education for each state. State and local taxes is allocated to cover the majority of educational costs. Student achievement depends upon the available funding allotted to each district. This author will attempt to discuss equalization of federal, state and local funding. Also, this author will attempt to describe fair, equitable and adequate tax systems.…
This is a major problem because public schools are being run at the lowest budget possible and dividing the money for charter and traditional schools means everyone is strapped for money. Many educators argue that it is not ethical to take money away from schools that are in need of programs that will benefit student achievement; while others argue that it is not ethical to make students attend failing schools. The infrastructure of charter schools will be different based on state…
The teacher quality of today is much weaker than what it has been in the past. In his article A New Deal For Teachers , Matthew Miller explains the demand for good teachers. He informs his readers that many teachers aren’t actually teaching because that was their desired profession, but because it was a last resort, so they don’t care as much for the students learning. Another issue of the teacher quality is salary. Miller explains that in the 1960s and 1970s school teachers were all very talented women but higher paying careers were not open to them. Now that those careers such as a doctor or a lawyer are open to anyone they are often taken over teaching because of the huge difference in salaries. The difference of a lawyer compared to teacher is around $2,000 starting out but topping out at around a difference of about $110,000. However some teachers who actually choose teaching as their top profession don’t mind the salary difference, they look at the greatness of the students to be fulfilling enough for them with the addition of free summers. An additional issue is that not many of these types of teachers are in the poorer and urban school districts. A shocking statistic was that half of the new teachers will actually quit within three years and they are usually the smarter teachers.…
Imagine going to school and finding half of your friends are moving to different schools because they have qualified for a school voucher. It's difficult to see them go because you have known them all your life. It's also difficult to watch them attend the school which everyone knows in your community is known to better than the one you are currently attending. Questions are also brought up to your mind with school vouchers. Students who don't qualify may ask themselves am I put into a disadvantage because my friends are attending a school, which is known to better than mine? Did my friends choose to attend this school or were there parents up to it? These questions can cause a dilemma to the students and their families. There are many advantages to school vouchers, however there are also disadvantages. Knowing both sides can lead you to your view of the school voucher.…
