Take Back The Schools Analysis
The movement to “Take back the schools” was a movement initiated by a group of Chicano students demanding for a change in their schools system in East Los Angeles California. The 1960’s was a time when Mexican American students were suffering from neglect and discrimination in their schools. It was obvious there was a problem with the school system of education only one out of four chicanos was completing high school. Students were separated into different classes by their IQ scores. Students with a lower IQ were put into shop classes instead of being put into the academic tracking where they would be prepared for college. The dropout rate from school was really a push out rate of Mexican Americans dropping out from school how it’s mentioned in the film. Their culture was not addressed and their schools were not doing much for them. Their academic advisors would set them low for their future by advocating how service jobs like the ones their parents were doing were a practical choice for Mexican Americans.

The effect that was made in the students facing these problems in their schools was very terrifying, some of them were in a point of being embarrassed of their heritage. They were embarrassed of being Mexican Americans, and this was something that had to be changed. The rise up of the Chicano students to demand their district officials for equal education rights in their school, was a movement that made the Chicano voice strong not only at East LA but all over the country. This is one point everyone should be able to understand, the video gives us the struggles Mexican Americans were facing at the time, and how they became together to overcome this issue is an example of unity something that we need to do now a days to become stronger and make our voices heard as a

    Overall, I found this film very surprising. I never realized how many Native American achievements that have been overlooked in today’s society. Native Americans have done so much to affect the formation of today’s country that it is astonishing. They have made so many contributions that I had never realized prior to this film. I thought that some of the most important contributions were irrigation techniques and medical procedures. Religion also played a vital role in shaping America today. Native Americans literally were involved in the development of nearly all aspects of America including sports and food. This film is an important one because it shines light on the long forgotten Native Americans. They made contributions in architecture, fishing, schools, industry materials, and government to name a few. I enjoyed the film because it is a celebration of Native Americans cultural contributions. I never realized how much has been overlooked. The film is also effective in disproving countless stereotypes that depict the typical Native American as some sort of savage warrior who is illiterate and misinformed. This could not be more far from the truth and must be corrected. Most of these stereotypes have been shaped by Hollywood television. It’s important to eliminate these stereotypes of Native Americans. Today, I believe that when most people think of an Indian they think of a crazy half naked man screaming through the forest with bows and arrows. This is contrary to the truth that many Indian societies were incredibly civilized and organized. This occurred in many different ways many of which have been incorporated into American life today.     I believe the first question that was asked from the director was how they identified themselves racially. There were so many different responses, but most of the minority did not identify themselves as "Americans." What was surprising to me was that most of the men there were born in the United States so they are American Citizens. Yet, they still felt alienated from this country.     In the 1950s the United States was very segregated even though there was no longer slavery the separation between the two races was still very great. In the south there were laws that did not allow for white and blacks to use the same accommodations, such as water fountains and restrooms in public places. Even though the North did not have these same laws it still suffered from de-facto segregation. For example, several new suburbs created in the 1950s were predominately white due to blacks not being able to afford to live there, resulting in the de-facto segregation. Therefore, White Americans continued to earn the superior jobs because they were attending exceptional schools and getting a higher level of education. The most powerful thing in the world is knowledge and even though African-Americans were allowed to attend school now the majority went to schools that weren’t funded well. As a result, African-Americans continued to receive an inferior education. For this reason, the movement began to use the “separate but equal” principle on their side. “Segregation did lifelong damage to black children, undermining their self-esteem,” argued Thurgood Marshall. For this reason, it was believed that African-American children felt as if they were unfit to associate with others.
