The video was very insightful with information that pertained to race. Even though the title of the video included the word diversity I was not expecting it to be based solely on race. I did believe that the way they explained race is very important the conversation between the two women weren’t awkward when they spoke about race, which is known to be a delicate topic. I did like that both of the women
were able to discuss race and how it is made up. I also liked the fact that the women were diverse when it comes to ones ethnic background. I thought that it was important when Michele Norris spoke about here different encounters of race when she was in different places. It was essential to include personal occurrences when speaking about race in the video because it added perspective from different backgrounds. I feel as if the video also touched bases on conformity and how being that we are a society of many diverse backgrounds we are susceptible to conform to the places.
I thought that both of the speakers were exceptionally knowledgeable about race. I liked that they both spoke confidently about the subject and not refraining from saying how they felt. I thought that Susan Williams was very kind as she pointed out specific examples from the text that was written by Norris. It showed that she was very interested and conversant with Norris’s work as well as race. This video was informative as to portraying some of the true issues that are based around race.
In the video the main topic was race and I thought that there should have been more content on other races rather than just speaking solely upon blacks and whites. There are many different races that exist and they were not included in the discussion and the topic is diverse conversations. When reading the title I speculated that it would be about a vast group of diverse individuals instead of just two races. I also thought that when Norris discussed those who sent in six-word sentence and an explanation she didn’t have to mention the names of a few. The movement of the camera for me was making it hard for me to focus often times it was easy for me to zone out because I was focused on the camera movement.
Overall, I thought that it was important that these two women form different backgrounds were able to have an open and honest discussion about race. I regard that often times race is not conferred because it is not an easy subject matter. Feelings are constantly involved and insensitivity prevails often. There should have been other races included in the diversity discussion. Diversity is illustrating a considerable variation and this was not depicted in the video.
When Norris mentioned the six word sentences and spoke about others it really stood out to me. There have always been comments I fell that are made about women of color. My six-word sentence is “You can’t be just black girl”. Many times I have been told that I must be mixed to be pretty and to have amazing bone structure. Often times I am asked what nationality I am as if my blackness is not beautiful. My blackness is divine and I am not a mixed chick. I don’t have to be mixed to be beautiful in and out. It hurts that the thought of women of color are only considered beautiful if they are mixed and don’t have course hair.
